What about OSX on non-Apple systems?

I know development versions of Intel MacOS X were floating around a couple months ago with some people installing them on their non-Apple PCs... any word on if the production version of OS X is still working on non-Apple systems?

Running Mac OS X on a white box PC is not as easy as booting off the original DVD. Even the original development version (10.4.1) didn't install/work without some hackery. (Although I have heard there are cracked/rebuilt DVD images floating around). Even then, you're probably going to have to use the same chipsets. From what I understand, Apple is using the Intel 945PM chipset, Intel Core Duo CPUs, and ATI X1600 GPU. I don't know what chip they're using for Firewire.

Yes it can be done, yes it has been done, no it probably isn't worth the trouble. Apple isn't going to support OSX for anything besides their own hardware, so you'll never get updates and will only be able to run specific hardware. You mise well just buy a mac if you want to use OSX.

Apple is locking it to apple hardware via TPM ( Trusted Platform Module) last I heard. THe chipset and such isn't too relevant to whether you can do it or not.

PC vendors (major OEMS) implement TPM's in their business lines of notebooks and some desktops, but they're using TPM for client security/authentication and not the DRM type implementation Apple seems to be applying.

There's another technical issue: as you probably know, Apple is using EFI, not a traditional BIOS, and we don't know how that will affect the ability to run OS X off of a Mac.

Also, the likelihood of OS X running the way you'd expect is fairly slim. For example, you may not have any video drivers, so you won't get Quartz Extreme acceleration - some CoreImage apps may not even run at all. We don't know if there will be necessary drivers included for network adapters, sound, and so on.

In short... wait for Windows Vista to be released, and buy a Mac that meets your requirements. :) You'll probably have a much better time of things!

I tried it and it was a lot of work and was not worth the effort, worse than a Beta.00000001 effort. But I did get the thing to run.

Some dude on the XPS/9300 section on Notebookforums runs some sort of Mac OS. Can't remember which, and seemed like a waste to me, but meh.

Link

It was on an XPS 2

I have OSX on my T40 right now set up to dual boot with WinXP Pro. Many features do not work or apps will not install and function. I just once in a while start it up to look around OSX to see if I could get use to it enough to buy an Apple system.

What features don't work? Also, what apps don't install? I'm just curious. :)

It's hard to use a setup which is missing drivers for half your hardware, and which you're not ready to actually use fully, as an objective way of deciding whether or not you like an OS. You wouldn't run Windows in Safe Mode every day, would you?

The best way to try OS X for real is to spend extended time using it at a retail shop which will let you try one of the demo models for several minutes or more, and which gives you an honest opportunity to run programs (i.e. you have Internet access, you aren't locked out of common apps, and so on).

Good work. Any app requring specific video support is very difficult if not impossible to get working. Some other pro apps like logic I have seen running on intel machines, at least in screenshots.
