I never really thought about it until now.

I have been very satisfied with the functionality of Office 97. I just installed Win2K on my Inspiron 4100 notebook (I run a dual-boot on my desktop WIN2K/98Se with Office on the 98 partition).

Does it work together? Or am I forced to upgrade to Office 2000?

I also got MS Word 2000 with the Dell software and MS Works (so I can 'get by" for now).

I didn't search back far enough.

<< 1) Install office 97 from CD
2) Install SR1 (optional)
3) Install SR2 (optional)
4) Here's the fix... re-install Office... yup, you heard me, re-install it... don't un-install first, just insert the CD, launch Office Setup, and choose the "re-install" option... problem solved... I've done this at least 4 times now, as I have to do this everytime I decide to wipe the hard drive and re-install everything.

And it will work with Win2K.

So I will use Office 97 with Word 2000.

Just out of curiosity, what is the problem that this fix is for?? I upgraded my 98SE to XP Pro and my office 97 continued to work, but in case I have to reinstall, what are the symptoms of the problem this addresses????

If you a do a search for "office 97" in archives, a July post tells about error messages with WIN2K that the reinstall fixes.

I really wasn't thinking when I posted this (I thought that i HAD searched archives). If Office 97 works with NT it should work with WIN2K. And it does using the above "fix" (if needed).

Now that my notebook is running WIN2K, I am happy. I almost returned it to Dell to get one with XP preinstalled. With my own install, I am free of all that extra Dell crap that littered ME (which is crap anyway - even compared to 98SE).

I ran office 97 on my win2k before, without any patches or re-installs but it ran fine...

so I am not sure about this problem you are talking about... The installation went flawless and everything ran fine afterwards...

Well, I am having problems now.

My copy of Office is an upgrade and it qualified to install on Win98SE.

However, it refuses to install on Win2K. :(

Thanks . . . actually that's pretty funny about the "upgrade" (but worth knowing and much appreciated . . . I thought I'd have to network to my desktop to make it work).

:)

Installed without a hitch and even installed SR-2 without needing a reinstall.

Now I am just wondering if I can stick Word 2000 on from the 6 disk MS Works without putting the whole suite on?

appopin,

yes, the installer for Works Suite lets you pick apps....no need to do the whole thing.
