What about IP address?

Hi,

Am planning to set up a wireless network for MAINLY cable internet sharing between desktop and notebook.

1. Currently my cable provider gives me a fixed IP address which I have to enter along with subnet mask, default gateway and DNS server in the LAN properties>TCP IP Properties.

I read that when you install the Dlink or Linksys router you have to leave that tab selected to 😱BTAIN IP ADDRESS AUTOMATICALLY:

Then where do I enter the IP addrees given by my cab;le guy. Will this whole thing work or will I waste my money? I cannot try and then buy as I need to order from abroad.

2. Is the cable modem and router desigfned to be kept ON all the time?

3. Will 802.11b/g work at about 40 feet with two brick walls inbetween?

In the router. Think of it as your router taking over as being the "thing" thats connected to the internet, and everything else in your house connects to the router.

Yes.

Will 802.11b/g work at about 40 feet with two brick walls inbetween?
You never know. Depends on the thickness of the walls mostly. I would bet that you'd get a weak but usable signal.
