I can't believe what I heard this afternoon. I work at a university in the IT department. One of our responsibilities is gathering and processing older surplus computer equipment and sending it off to the barn. From there its supposed to be bundled up and sold at auction to recover some of the university's investment in this equipment. We just sent down a load of about 20 working Dell P3-550 computers, 18 working 17" CRT monitors, and a load of assorted mice, keyboards & speakers. But during the conversation while these are being loaded up I find out that they've stopped sending stuff to the barn. Instead it now all goes to the dumpster. The DUMPSTER!! $1000+ worth of functional computer equipment is being thrown away because these inbred redneck dip$hits don't care. And they say education is in a budget crisis.
Now I know what some of you may be thinking. "Why the hell would you want a 550?" Just how much power do you need for a basic computer? That 550 can easily run a web browser, check your email, balance your checkbook, be your kid's first computer, ect., ect.. The list goes on and on.

I hate that we live in a throw away society....it is just aweful on so many levels.

That's a crazy decision - even if they don't want to go through the hassle of auctioning them off there are plenty of organisations that will take them off your hands for free.

Our company has a yearly yardsale ... with no prices attached. Almost all of the stuff gets snatched up. I have about 6 PIII's 866 w/Win2K licenses, two 17" flat CRTS and a whole whack of 20GB HD's that no one wanted. Free. Should sell some it ... 🙂

Waste like that is bad though ... see what you can rescue.

Time to be a whistleblower, call your local media. Throwing that stuff away can be bad for the environment as well. Should at least be recycled.

I'm typing this on my work computer...........

COMPAQ Deskpro DPENS P3/500
128mb
4mb onboard video
12x cd rom (laptop style even, 'cuz of the low profile)
floppy
& that's about it.

I use this one over one of the newer Optiplexes we got around here 'cuz we had to change OS's on those & there aren't any sound drivers for Win98 on those. This Compaq has a built-in speaker and runs on Win98 already so I just kept it. (i.e. I'm the only one w/ sound in the whole place...LOL)

Works great!!! I would also be sick about somebody doing something like that!!!

Wow, man, you should report this to your local news and get them to report on the University. This would make the university take drastic actions (send these computers to destitute schools. or charities...) for political reasons, but it would institute change.

Northeastern Univeristy used to do that. Freshamn year, i made so around 1k just selling old moniters they threw away.

My company during the summer probably got rid of around 500 IBM Netvistas PIII 900MHZ and replaced them with Dells GX280. All the netvistas were sent to recycling.

I loved what they did at my school...there was a "trash heap" where they threw all the old computer equipment and everyone was free to simply vulch whatever they thought they could use.

I'd might be interested in some parts as well. *shifty eyes* 🙂

yes. i want some new monitors and some P3 machines or something 🙂 there's some cash in it for ya if you can do it 🙂

We're in the process of giving away our old PCs with a drawing. Didn't enter because I don't need a 400mhz celery with 64mb ram.

If they were just going to throw it away, they should of given them away for free to any student who may want one.

Where is this dumpster you speak of? I'd like to do some diving.

And honsetly if they are just throwing it away, send out an email that says FREE COMPUTERS, they'll be gone in seconds.

You can utilize it as essential parts of your network.. throw linux on that bad boy and you have yourself a server!

and there are millions of children in this country whose parents cannot afford to buy their kids a computer at all. You would think if the school doesnt want to go thru the trouble to list and sell them, they would donate them to charity.

perhaps, if yu have the time, you could contact someone in your state to see if there is an outreach program for such kids. Maybe you can contact someone who will start one.
