What a waste of coffee

there is a coffee maker here at work that people use and i just went by it and saw there was coffee sitting in it from the workday, i went to pour out the coffee and saw that this must happen a lot since the glass is stained brown...well then i decided to make some fresh coffee before i left ( i normally bring my coffee from home but I am here mad late and need a cup for the drive home)

anyway i open up the filter part and there is a filter filled to the brim with coffee... this is a coffee filter that is round at the bottom...and the coffee is filled all the way to the top of it...there was so much coffee in it, when i tried to lift it the filter was ripping under the weight

uhm...isnt that a crazy amount of coffee...

Note: as far as I have seen there are 4-5 people who drink from this coffee maker

so a full ten cups (to the ten mark on the side of the glass) would take about 20 tablespoons of fresh grinds....it will fill up a coffee filter. Whats teh capacity of the machine?

yeah this was more then that though, i mean the filter was basically overflowing and this is after it was already used, so it was more compact then when they put it in...the filter couldnt hold the weight when i was lifting it

Most likely they do what I do. Use the filter 2-3 times before throwing it away.

Just put the new grounds ontop of the old. If anything, it's less of a waste.

ugh, i hope they didn't put fresh grinds on top of the old ones....and never double brew the grinds, that is a big no-no. If you overextract the coffee, you will get bitter coffee; bitter coffee is not caused by using too much grinds, often by using too little for the amount of water. Use the right amount of grinds for how much coffee you are going to make. 2-4 tablespoons per (8 ounce) cup is the guideline. If you want the coffee less strong, add hot water AFTER its done brewing.

Oh, when i brew, i have found the grinds to "expand" a little when its done brewing the grinds swell up with watter.

At my work we could easily fill more then 10 cups of coffee with less then HALF of the coffee filter being filled. It was not a big coffee machine by any means.

by your words, the coffee machine must have been at least a 10 cup machine, which is not huge, but not small also.

LOL, sacrilege... you should serve time for that maneuver.

Why is it ew?

I see it as maximum caffeine extraction. 😉 lol

Because you're wasting filter space with used grounds! Those grounds will just release small amounts of caffeine. Fresh dry grounds release the most.

😉

As I sip my triple dark coffee at 2:41 am because I CAN'T FSCKING SLEEP!!!!

😉

You do have the basic understanding that wetted coffee grounds are MUCH heavier than dry coffee grounds, right? The roasted (dried) and ground coffee ABSORBS water during the brewing process and EXPANDS in perceived volume. That's why used grounds are heavier and the filter is much fuller than when grounds are put in dry.
