What A/V Codecs Do YOU Think Are Required? Recommended?

Hmm.. Required? Other than the standard winXP ones (mpeg1, mp3, etc.)? Hmm.. Here's a list
-Mpeg2 (for soft-dvd playback)
-Divx
-xVid
-Indeo (intel something or the other) .. though I hardly see it used now..
-QT (not really a codec, but still)..

divx and xvid are the same. If you have any variant of the divx codec (perhaps on a public machine) and are finding it doesn't play new movies that have XVID, DX50, or other variants in their 4cc bytes (offset 0x4cc from beginning of file), try changing these 4 bytes to DIV3 or even MP43 and the odds are extremely good that it will work perfectly. Worst I've seen is a few videos will have psychedelic colors if they are meant for Divx and you play them with a plain vanilla mpeg4 codec by hex editing.

The list needed is:
DIVX (which is a superset of mpeg4, which is in turn a superset of mpeg2)
Cinepak (for QT movies)
mp3
ogg vorbis
ac3
