What a terrible morning

My spouse spent all night snoring loudly, so I got no sleep. :| Drag myself out of bed, drag my kids out of bed, get them almost ready to go to school and my 9 year old comes out of his room crying. His hamster wasn't moving in it's cage. Appeared to be dead was limp and cold, but when we picked it up, it moved just a little. So we spent two hours warming it up in our hands and petting it to get it's blood flowing. It gradually started breathing regularly and it's heart was beating faster and it was starting to move it's little whiskers and hands and feet, blinking and opening and closing it's mouth, then it just went stiff. 🙁

Well at least you got the death lesson out of the way....

My money's on her having taken the "God took it back to heaven" route..

Nope, we're atheist. Now I've got a dead hamster in a box on the counter waiting for everyone to get home from school/work so we can give her a burial. We'll plant her next to the hen that died last year, in the rose garden inside the garden fence (we bury them there so our dogs can't get in and try to dig em up.) Poor little Isadora.

oh man...that sucks... you guys should have taken it to the vet.

A vet? I'm sorry if I sound heartless, but hamsters typically live two or three years, are used as lab-rat type animals (not that I agree with it, but around a million die in the US for research every year), and cost all of a few dollars. I'm not taking a hamster to a vet.

Look at the bright side...at least hamsters are cheap to replace. The kids will get over it in a few days and you can get a replacement. They need to see things die so they get used to the misery side of life....

Are you always an asshole?

Well, we buried Isadora and my son chose a Rose of Sharon Hibiscus from my greenhouse to plant over her. I told him that as the plant grew, she'd become part of it, that life comes from life as nutrients were recycled. My 6 year old had been rather unemotionally fascinated by the dead hamster until we covered it with soil and planted the shrub on top. She burst into tears and I had to hold her all the way back to the house. 🙁
