I went out to target to buy cd-r's today and they had two kinds that i was looking at. they were both made by tdk and they both held 700MB/80min.
-group A: marked "data", 30cd's, price:$17
-group B: marked "music", 20cd's, price:$19

Is this a rip-off or what? I'm not missing something am I? Needless to say I bought the "data" cd's.

With the music ones, RIAA gets a cut for compensation due to "piracy."

<< what difference is there? >>

There is no difference from the standpoint of a person with a computer burner. Both "music" CDR and "data" CDR will work fine in your computer burner.

The only difference is that people with those home audio consumer stand-alone burners from Harmon Kardon, Pioneer, Sont etc can only use the CDRs labeled for "music."

Actually, there is a little difference in some of them. Some of the data CDRs have dyes with a low reflectivity so that some CD players cannot read them. But the dye in the "music" CDRs (which is usually green or light blue, but sometimes is silver or gold) has a higher reflectivity, so just about any CD player can read them. The reflectivity of the dye isn't really a huge issue with the newer CD players, but some of the older ones have some issues with it (for example, my stereo wouldn't read TDK CDRs, but it will read the Kodak gold ones)
