I wont agree or disagree because we don't know anything about this situation, but if you are making jokes in his class and causing a disruption then he is right to say that to you.

I agree. Plus, you said yourself "I get more laughs than him." You're "showing him up" in front of your peers; that shows lack of respect on your part, plus it makes him lose the respect of the rest of the students.

You may think he's a tool and he might just be; but you are wrong here.

i don't really disturb the class per se, i joke based on what he says. short one liners, it keeps the class awake! i'm just tryin to break the bordom. and he doesnt even use the entire time so he really isnt strapped for time

You can be on good terms with your TA and still be a disruption in class. I have become friends with several of my TA's throughout college, but never extended that friendship directly into their teaching time. If you want to joke around, that's cool, but do it in office hours. Classroom time is for the TA to teach or answer questions.

honestly, if i were a TA, i would want an extremely casual relationship with my students, almost as if they are my friends, but i have knowledge to share with them on whatever topic

Doing their job is separate from their relationship with you.

Make life easy on him.

True, I did a TA position when I was a Sr. Organic chem lab. I generally had a good time in lab helping the students to learn and think about chem from a realistic/practitioner standpoint, but the grades are tough to give. When it comes down to it, the grades usu. end up being about the sum of your scores compared to the historical averages for the class (how many A's, etc...) and a tiny bit of adjusting at the boarders. In that respect, you may be ok... but remember that a college A is actually a pretty tricky thing to get if your TA wants to be picky.

I think one thing you should fear more is that TAs often grade the finals... where the student has little recourse if graded "oddly".

i'm so glad my college never had TA's teach class. Having a real professor do the teaching was so much better.
