WTF man. You have trouble every single time you ride your bike. You dropped your bike, almost killed yourself and now this.

C'mon. You are shens'ing us right?

10. Wallet with $150 and credit cards.
Why wasn't that on your person? I also keep a (now old) 8gb mini USB drive on my keychain, in a pocket. (Contents encrypted in case I lose it/anyone takes it.)

Man,

That totally sucks. I really feel bad about what happened. Hopefully you had your information and pictures backed up somewhere else. It doesn't sound like you had your camera equipment with you at least.

Were the bungie cords dry-rotted or something? Did they just have too much load and gave away?

I have a bag on my bike also (cruiser with a luggage rack). It is secured in 2 ways: a cable lock to the luggage rack, and velcro traps to the sissy bar. You can see if maybe they make a bag for your Ninja that you can use a cable lock for added security/piece of mind.

I took a look and I think I know what happened, sorta.

The 4 bungee cords were fine as far as I could tell before riding off (two main cords that attach to the frame, 2 secondary ones that hook around the metal license plate holder). Just 1 month old.

If you view the bike from the back, the exhaust is on the right side. The left side bungee cord somehow snapped, so the right side bungee cord pulled the bag off the center of the seat and to the right side of the bike, right on top of the exhaust. My exhaust has melted plastic all over it. The exhaust melted the bag and contents as well as the right side bungee cord. After this bungee cord snapped, the bag just went flying off, as the other two bungee cords are not enough to hold the bag on the bike.

I'm still going to replace this bag with one of the same kind, but this time I will augment the bungee cords with actual nylon straps that either click-lock or ratchet down, as the bungee cords are clearly defective/susceptible to snapping.

I'll tell you what, you're damned lucky the whole mess didn't wind up stuck in your rear wheel or you would have found yourself skidding down the highway with a locked rear wheel.

It's not "the 101". You're not in LA.

Sucks you lost your stuff, but I have little pity for people that lose shit on roads. Ran over a 4" pipe on 680 a couple years ago. Then a few months later I clipped a ladder. Just yesterday I had to avoid a freaking wheel & tire that was rolling down 280 in downtown SJ.
I feel bad for him, too, but I've had a tire go out on the highway from riding over refuse, I've hit a pop can just thrown out in front of me and ran over a great big fvcking grocery bag of cardboard. I see sh*t fly off the back of trucks and generally am glad when some dipsh*t's furniture is destroyed because it's wicked dangerous. I think people who put stuff in trucks should be first required to take a basic course on physics and aerodynamics so that they won't do things like put a sheet of plywood leaning forward with its lip over the top of the truck to catch wind and fly out the back.

There are so many signs that fuzzy shouldn't be riding a bike, so many.

That comes next month.

I've already warned him to stop riding his motorbike, he is going to kill or at least maim himself, and probably soon. He is not the kind of guy who at the age of 75 is still riding his harley on weekends, he'll just never, ever make it.

I avoid riding near pickup trucks with shit in the bed like the plague. Honestly, the worst vehicle you can ride near is a pickup truck. I've seen furniture, ladders, construction supplies, mattresses, even bed shells fly off of pickup trucks on the freeway. I swear, some of the people who own these vehicles are the least responsible, dumbest motherfuckers on the planet.

ouch man, hopefully insurance will cover that :( :(

fwiw, can you get saddlebags or something for your 250? that would definitely more secure than using bungee coords (i have a tie-down set as well, but have yet to actually use it - i just wear a backpack and that's it)

That sucks.

Hope you have insurance and have proof of purchase for most of your goods.

This always serves as a lesson to religiously backup your data (me and everybody else)--as much of a pain in the ass that it is.
