I was riding back home on the 101 on my motorcycle with my motorcycle tail bag behind me. When I got home, the bag was no longer on my motorcycle. I remembered that I had specifically done a pre-ride check of the four bungee cords and hooks that hold down the bag and found them to be ok.

I ride back and retraced my steps and I find the bag and contents absolutely shredded on the highway.

Damage tally:

1. Sony Viao Z Laptop - only found pieces of the screen and battery - $2,269.47
2. A couple months worth of invoices and accounting on my Quickbooks. 100+ invoices that I now have to manually re-enter.
3. Photos from all my jobs for the last week - 25 jobs.
4. Apple iPad (only found the screen and aluminum backing) - $500
5. Apple iPad Case (completely melted) - $50
6. Laptop bag (melted) - $100
7. Backpacking headlamp - $100
8. Portable HDD (only found the casing) - $100
9. Logitech Wireless Mouse - $75
10. Wallet with $150 and credit cards.
11. Motorcycle Tail Bag - $75
12. Rigid Gas Permeable Contacts - $500
13. Shredded and frayed bungee cord from the bag.
14. I'm sure there's more.

I don't even want to tally it all up. I'm going to sleep.

Wow that sucks. At least insurance will cover the valuables.

Let this be a lesson - good panniers are very expensive, but worth every penny.

Oh shit man I'm sorry to hear that :( Insurance? Please tell me you had backups of those photographs (apart from the laptop)?

sucks dude... but... didn't you periodically check your rear view mirrors? you didn't notice shit flying off your bike?

Properly adjusted mirrors won't show you what's directly behind. And on most sport bikes if they were adjusted that way all they'll show is your shoulders.

I can see how you could not notice. If the whole bag came off in one go you might not even notice....and you wouldn't normally see a bag right behind you through your mirrors.

It's not "the 101". You're not in LA.

Sucks you lost your stuff, but I have little pity for people that lose shit on roads. Ran over a 4" pipe on 680 a couple years ago. Then a few months later I clipped a ladder. Just yesterday I had to avoid a freaking wheel & tire that was rolling down 280 in downtown SJ.

Dude, that blows. This is precisely why I never carry anything valuable on my bike. It's too easy to get into a minor accident and damage or completely destroy fragile electronics/gear.

Be glad you didn't have all your photography gear with you too.

damn that sux man. Go real backpack.

Riding with a backpack presents some different challenges. A) You are carrying extra weight on your back which can become uncomfortable after a while B) It can create extra drag/lift which can become uncomfortable on your muscles after a while, especially at freeway speeds.

You are just pissed that you did not see the bag laying on the highway first.

Wow. Which part of the 101? Traffic is insane on almost all areas of that highway.
Sorry that happened though. I can only feel your dismay. Still worser things can happen and while you lost a bunch of things and have to re-work a lot of stuff, it's still doable.
