the dumbarse that setup a fairly critical server didn't setup a mirror... so guess what? the drive failed. The important DB stuff was backed up, but there are some really proprietary apps that are REALLY difficult to reinstall. The drive was clicking and knocking... so I froze it. And it would work for like 5 min... then I'd freeze it and it'd work for 5 minutes....

so... check this out:

I'm now 1 hour into an image backup and it's still working.. lol

If it's a critical server:

A) Why aren't backups done on it?

B) Why isn't there a redundant data storage system setup for it?

Yea ice really does work. I had to do the same thing to about 3 of my failed HDD over the years.

A) Like full backups on a tape storage library, so you could easily restore everything (apps and data)

B) Well ok that one was my bad. But if you took over this guy's position, that's something you should have implemented :p Or if he's still there, let his dumbass figure it out.

A) I'm talking "real backups", not this selective file backup BS hackjob.

B) I originally asked why he didn't do a RAID5 and forgot mirror = RAID1, blah. :p

I had a grinding drive once, and it got louder if you slightly squeezed it, so I took the top cover off and slaved it with the bare disks showing... it worked :)

I'm pretty much assuming you don't do this for a living.

you can't do "full" backups of an ENTIRE drive while it's being used. WTF do you expect to happen? We have 50+ servers that would need that. Our backups are already practically running into monday

Well I wasn't aware you had 50+ "critical" servers that would need full backups. :p If it's a drive that's used 24/7, it should have had some sort of backup implemented in place on it. I guess I'm preaching to the choir now b/c I'm sure you're kicking the dumbass who did it, but that's just poor planning/implementation.

How are you making it so that condensation doesn?t appear on the inside of the bag from the heat of the HDD? Beauty idea anyway!
