How low will people go?? I mean that is freaking a sick individual!! I know welcome to the world of Republicans....

Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.) mocked coronavirus concerns by wearing a gas mask on the House floor just days before an infected man from his district died.

“Reviewing the coronavirus supplemental appropriation and preparing to go vote,” he said in a tweet Wednesday before the Senate approved an $8.3 billion emergency funding bill to combat the virus.

In the tweet, Gaetz is seen wearing a gas mask.

Just two days later, Gaetz released a statement saying a death from COVID-19, the disease caused by the virus, had occurred in his district.

“I’m extremely saddened to learn of the first fatality in our district from coronavirus, a Northwest Floridian residing in Santa Rosa County,” he said. “Our prayers are with his family and loved ones during this difficult time.”

Florida officials announced two deaths from the virus on Friday, including the Santa Rosa County man, as well as two new cases in Broward County. That brings the total number of confirmed cases in Florida to seven, according to CBS News.

So far there have been 17 documented deaths from the virus in the U.S., with hundreds more infected across the country. At least 3,000 people have died worldwide. The situation has been further exacerbated by a lack of CDC testing kits for the virus and by an administration that continues to downplay the growing threat.

Conservative perspective in a nutshell: I personally do not know anyone who [insert problem, condition, policy issue], so [insert problem, condition, policy issue] is not a concern and our government shouldn't be doing anything about it. The moment they do something about it is the moment our freedoms are infringed and they start wasting taxpayer money.

Works for lots of things:
  • Has conoravirus
  • Died in a mass shooting
  • Lives in poverty in the inner city
  • Can't afford health care
  • etc.

The more I think about it, the more I wonder if staunch conservatism isn't just the product of an inability to feel empathy (whether genetic or learned). They don't care about anyone outside of their immediate social circle because they don't know how to care for people whose welfare doesn't directly serve them.

That'd also explain why they latch on to Trump with such mindless fervor. His narcissist disorder is, in a sense, the extreme version of the conservative ideal: he not only doesn't empathize with others, he genuinely believes he's the only one that matters.

That is exactly it. A lot of them grew up in shit lives in poor rural areas without any opportunities. Living without hope of improvement and an unsupportive family leads people into self preservation mode and leads to the inability to think about others or have empathy. When they see a Democrat reach out to them and tell them they deserve better or got the raw end of the stick they are immediately suspicious because they don't understand empathy and don't understand that some leaders really do want to improve people's lives, so their knee jerk reaction is to ridicule those that have empathy and call them weak, rather than embracing it and allowing someone to help.

Maybe he can get a gig on sitting on the end of the couch saying I'll drink to that when Trump goes back to reality TV.

Some frat boys never grow-up.
