Anyone have any suggestions on getting the most efficent but most quiet heatsink? Would it be better to get the Zalman 7000 or a ThermalTake SLK-800U and a quiet 120mm fan?

Never gets above 35C (and man is it quiet compared to the Volcano 6cu which was cooling the previous CPU - Athlon 850). Looks cool too. :D

Just wish I could overclock more on this K7S5A board. Maybe after I update the BIOS...
Problem is I don't see an option to up the FSB beyond 133 in the BIOS. I suppose I need to read a o'cing article?

Oh and gratz michael :)

Use the cheepo bios which allows you to overclock with FSB adjustments.

You can find it here :)

You're correct. It's a B-Step Thoroughbred. Let me see if I can find a pic. BRB.

I can't find a pic, but hopefully someone else can. :)

You want a B-step TBred...I think most of them being sold these days are B Step.

I've got mine at a nice 10.5 x 200 @ 1.700 volts. That makes 2100MHz. :D I have had it to about 2250, but it needs 1.85 volts and then it runs too hot for my liking.

I have a big mutha HSF on there. Thermalright AX-7, with AS3 and an Antec 34CFM fan. Not loud at all. Right now I'm at 42C and 12 hours of Prime95 gets me to 49C. For the $105 I paid for this CPU, it's a blatant STEAL.

Cool. I saw some of those for about 78 shipped. I've got an old "pure copper" HS, so I should be good on the cooling.

I've an A7N8X deluxe mobo (rev 1.04), do you think I'd have any problems running it at 166(333)? Which comes out to about 2166mhz I think? Everyone keeps saying you need rev 2 boards?? I don't buy that really. maybe that's to run it at 200? dunno... I haven't overclocked in years.

I'm not real smart on the Asus board; I have the Epox, but AFA OCing goes, they are basically the same. The Epox is known to overclock better at the extreme limits (200MHz++) than the Asus.

You will have no problem hitting 166! What RAM are you going to use, though? Crucial PC2700 can usually do better than 166. I'd get some Corsair XMS3200CAS2 if you're planning on going much higher than 175 or so.

BTW, the big deal with the NForce2 chipset and the B-Step T-breds is that the multiplier is UNLOCKED. Yes, unlocked. No pencil trick needed! You just go into the bios, lower the multi and crank the snot out of the FSB.

Oh, AND NForce2 locks the PCI/AGP busses in SPEC. That's why the NForce2 is The God Chipset.

I'm running a 200MHz FSB and my AGP/PCI cards don't give a hoot!!!!

Sweeeeeeeeeeeet. :)

I've heard a lot of chatter about the rev 2 of the A7N8X boards being the ones to have... I'm guessing it is due to being able to hit the 200mhz fsb easier though. I'll get a b-step chip and see what I can get with my rev 1.04 board.

Thanks!

Excellent! We'll see you over the CPU/Overclocking forums "complaining" that you can't get over 2.2GHz real soon! ;)

Doubt it. I'm not even going to clock it that high. I'll just get it to go to 2700+ specs if I can. 2.167giggers is fast enough for $78. ;)

I might have to look into getting one of these talked about fans in this thread though. THEN I'll see how high I can get it to go.

Right now, it's not going to do me a lot of good being I'm Still using a GF2 GTX vid card (ouch!).

Now If I could only get a video card for $80 and overclock the piss out of it! ;)

Unfortunately, video cards are already overclocked from the factory to the hilt as they are!

The 8RDA+ can be found for $96...honestly, it's a LOT of motherboard for under $100. :)

WHITEDOG, lose that boat anchor of a videocard!! ;)

GF4 4200Ti are about $120 these days. Great cards. I have a Palit brand 4200. It doesn't overclock for squat. I get maybe another 5% on the core and memory and I get artifacts.

I like to game at 1152x8674x32, so that does hurt FPS a bit. 1024x768 yields better results, but I like the higher res.

Waiting for prices on the 4600's to drop to about $200. Should be by the end of the summer, hopefully.

FTI Computer is selling @ $190 incl. shipping.

WOW! I need to check that out...just to make sure they aren't RMAs/Refurbs. My box would then be complete.

Kickass disk subsystem - check
Kickass CPU - check
Kickass memory/FSB - check
Kickass - videocard...not yet

Thanks!

No GF4 for me. My next card will have to handle xFSAA and xAnisotropic. So that's going to be a 9500 or better or GFfx or better.

Right now I'm leaning to get a 9700Pro. haven't heard too much good about the fx cards... I don't really have any games that "need" a new video card right now, everything I have plays ok... so I'll wait to get one.

I'm looking for Unreal2 to show up on the "used" rack at EB. By then I'll get a card.

I'm already facing having to pay $200 for a card. They just don't get as cheap as CPU's do and still be any good.

You see, it's like this, over the years, I've probably blown around 30-40 thousand bux on getting computer upgrades and stuff... I'm over paying premium prices for the goods... I just get what I need now.

After recently purchasing a Radeon 9700 Gold and aiming for another in a week I can heartily recommend them!

OMG, NOLF2 runs so damn smooth at max settings :D

Having said this, I respect Michael for sticking with Nvidia. The GF4 4600 is a powerful card and it's nice to see someone going for a VPU which isn't top of the line!

damn i wish i could do nolf 2 at max. only can do 1024x768 at max in game settings. no 4x aa and stuff. stupid ati pro 9000.heh:) still pretty.

nolf is another new game that totally rejects any card withot a gpu, friends tnt 2 ultra couldn't start the game.

and yea the ecs isn't quite a less then 100 dollar m/b. i consider it a less then 50 dollar board considering its always less then 100 with a cpu combined at frys. new cheepo bios does open up a 166mhz setting. wonder if itowrks.
