A few weeks ago I get a call from my aunt. She tells me that she wants to hook up there printer to the downstairs compter and beable to print stuff from the upstairs on it. I said ok sure, we need to network the two. She says to me, well the entire house is networked so it shouldn't be too hard. Ok, so I go and look at the "networked" house. Well it wasn't networked, it had a phone line and cable hook up in every room but it wasn't networked for PC use. So they ask what are there options. I said well we can either start drilling holes or go wireless. They choose to go wireless. Well thats ok but then I was faced with another issue. The downstairs computer is 8 fricken years old!!! P1 166mhz MMX, 32mb edo ram, Win95, you get the picture. So i tell them, "i'm not sure if a wireless card will work in that computer." "well give a try" they say. Ok. So I go buy the router and network card. On the box it says "minium requirements" 64mb RAM. So at this point i'm just like, whatever its not my money. So today I went to attempt it. 4 hours I spent trying to do this. I first installed Win98se on the dino computer and the network card. Amazingly it installed and worked on the computer. So I went up and hooked up the router. Had everything running, even had the internet working on the dino computer. Then the toubles started. First I couldn't figure out how to share the printer with Win98, did everything it told me to do but the "share" tab wasn't coming up under the printer properties. Then the system started locking up, I'm assuming because it was out of memory. So then they asked what options they had and I simply said, "get a new computer".

You could just ditch the downstairs computer from the wireless network, go wired with it and install a print server on the printer.

Make sure you have the file and print sharing service installed on that 98SE box.
