Another episode of COPS was on Fox tonight and one of the segments pretty much disgusted me. The local cops were running a little undercover drug sting operation. They had some hip-hop types posing as dealers on a side street and after they made the sale, cops in SUVs would swarm in and make the arrest.

Get this: one person bought $30 worth of marijuana from the undercover dealer and the big boys in blue moved in for the attack. During the arrest, the cop said both the driver and the passenger are going to jail and the cops are going to seize their car and if they want it back, they can buy it from the sheriff. What a #&!@ load of crap! There are FAR more horrid crimes than purchasing a freakin' plant yet our government has us brainwashed into believing that this necessitates jail time and government confiscation of private property.

You don't have to be a pothead or a legalization proponent to be utterly disgusted with the War on Drugs. The punishment must fit the crime. What awful crime was committed?

Granted, its tolerated here...

"Granted, its tolerated here..."

Yeah, Aphex, maybe you should mention the "here" you speak of, as not everyone is privileged to know what "here" is.

Care to announce that it's the Netherlands? Or am I missing something?

It's illegal, they bought it, they got arrested. See anything wrong with this? I sure don't.

Speeding is illegal, but I don't have to buy my car back from the state for doing 10 over.

You could try butting out, as "here" could mean anywhere without a frame of reference.

mithrandir2001, obey and serve. Do not question authority. The State knows what is best for us. Why, that weed could very well have cost countless lives as the mood-altered Evil Doer could very well go on a killing spree to gun down 20, if not 50 innocent citizens!

Speeding isn't a felony... did you know that?

A lot of things are illegal but you don't go to jail for them nor do the authorities confiscate your private property. Remember the arrestees were buyers not sellers...and the quantity of their purchase was very small.

I'm not saying I completely agree with the law, but breaking it isn't the way to change it...

What's the REAL scary thing here is that you can have your house/estate siezed if you are even reported as harboring drugs. There was a HUGE case down in Florida (I think) where a family had their estate siezed because somebody reported that they were growing drugs on their property.

Perhaps this is a way for them to get informants; We'll give you your car back and you wont have to go to jail, if you get some info for us...I'm not sure how legal that would be, but im certain they wouldnt show it on COPS:D

Hey, I've got an idea... don't want to lose your car? Don't buy drugs in it! Man, maybe I can patent such an original idea as that!

This is true and it's one of government's most powerful hold over the lives of its citizens. I read about someone who had a rare vision disorder and would go blind save for one option -- weed. Somehow, and I forget the details here, taking marijuana either aided or prevented blindness in case his but because his state didn't allow medical use of pot, he was forced to grow it on his own private property. The State discovered this, confiscated his home and property and introduced him to the state's excellent criminal system.

I did a report on forfeiture laws for a speech class; it was a real eye opener.

But, it's human nature, you dangle the prize money that is available through these forfeiture laws and you can see how the money becomes the impetus behind police actions not the war on drugs.

This is why I grow my marijuana in remote areas on public land.

no sh!t some of you guys are retarded... the reason they confiscate the vehicles is because of what else could be found in the car of drug users... didnt you see the part where the old lady was buying pot, and had 2 crack stones in her cigarette pouch? THAT is why they confiscate vehicles...

if you dont want your vehicle confiscated dont commit a felony in it...

You should get your foot cut off for speeding then.

You should get your hand hacked off for forgetting to sign your taxes.

Any law that makes a sizable percentage of otherwise non-law-breaking citizens into lawbreakers is wrong IMO. For such a free country, we have a lot more things restricted than other 'non-free' countries.

I suppose you think a 21 age for drinking is acceptable too.

Plus, whatever happened to entrapment? Perhaps if the pot wasn't there - offered by police officers - then people wouldn't have bought it. Why do officers of the law get to break the law to enforce it?

And you think the state is going to let you off easier because of this?

The "herb" is illegal in the U.S. If you chose to violate the federal laws on cultivating, posession or distribution of this product, you should spend 15 years in a 6X9 foot cell with Bubba the boy lover.

Go figure. The episode of Cops with the car seizures was taped in Florida (Tampa, to be specific).

In Florida, you want to abuy drugs on foot. That way, they only confiscate your sneakers.
