OMFG... I just checked my bank statement today and I noticed a $50 charge. I thought to myself, "WTF? I know the charge wasn't $50. I only authorized $15." Bill was $13. I wrote in $2 tip, put down the total, and signed my name. So I go my Customer Copy and see that it says "AUTHORIZED UP TO $50.00" underneath the signature line. I didn't notice this at the time because I was buzzed.

MOTHERF*CKERS!!! :|:|:|

Should I call the bank immediately or wait a week or so?

wait a week. it will be gone and replaced with the real amount. they just open it up for $50 to make sure the card is good.

It happened to me before. If you bring your bill and receipt back to the restaurant, they would basically fest up and give you a gift card or comp something. It's really frustrating to think that someone (usually the owner) can get away with it.

Wake up and learn the terminoligy before you start getting your panties all in a bunch. Restaurants and even gas stations and hotels routinely AUTHORIZE your card for more than the amount, that just puts a temp hold on the card, this goes to cover incidentals such as tips, in room movies etc and in the case of gas, they pre Authorize to make sure you have enough on the card. Its not actually charged, its just held and will clear in 1-2 days. Most places wont even tell you this.

Yep it's an "authorization" which should be released once the charge has hard posted.

You signed your name right over the pre-auth warning, is it the restaurants fault you can't read?
