what a $145/month in cat food buys

Trying to fatten them up to sell to the local Chinese restaurant?

I hope there is a vet offering a discounted spay and nutter program in the area.

I work with a lady that spends about $300 - $350 a month just on cat food. she is not married, does not have any kids, so she takes care of the local feral cat population.

Next set of kittens we are going to use an organization. However...many of these cats are someone else's pets.

To others...I go through about five 25lbs bags of cat food a month for these outside cats at about $15-16 a pop and about 6-8 cans of cat food at about .40 cents a can per day.

That better be some damned quality food. I know a guy who feeds about 10 times as many feral cats for less than $150 per month, but he doesn't feed them every day. IIRC, he feeds them two or three times per week. They're not on his property, he drives to an industrial/office park along the back where the dumpsters are. There are like 100 cats in there that hide out in the field/woods.

The local shelter and some rescues finally convinced him to start trapping a couple females each week and getting them spayed (they would pay for it).

Well the dry food is Kirkland Feline Maintenance which is an excellent food even if it wasn't so economical. Canned, we feed Friskies. The canned variety of cat food is more or less an even playing field unlike dry.

8 cats, so like 20 pounds of usable meat...that's over seven bucks a pound! Even if you tan the hides yourself and use the bones for soup, that's still some expensive cat food.

It's an insulated shelter. It's double-walled with foam inserts and foil. Inside is straw.

They use it as a bed sometimes now, in the winter it was always packed with cats.

My wife and I did this for an old cat that was always outside my apartment and in the winter we would let him in to hang out. When we moved we took the cat with us. Turned out to be a mistake, since he was actually owned by someone, turns out they just kept him outside. Our landlord tried to get him back from us, but at this point the cat was having kidney failure and we were administering subq fluids to him 2 times a week. The owner didn't want the vet bills or the responsibility so he said we could keep him. He lived another 2 years after that.

I tend to leave strays alone now, in the fears that I would be luring someone's outdoor cat to my house.
