Buying a condo, or even a house for the kid(s) while they're in college is a common practice. The only thing that differs is the number of zeroes in the price. Instead of Mom and Dad buying their 25th rental property back in the hometown, they invest in a place in the college town where the kids are. The kids don't have to live in some shithole college rental and the parents will likely make some money on the investment.

I pleaded with my parents to do that. My condo cost $60K and they were going to pay $24K in rent anyways. They refused and the property is now worth $500K.

That's disgusting, really. I guess this is what happens when people grow up with stuff like Saved by the Bell: College Years and Friends and think that they are realistic representations of those type of people, at that point in their lives, and that type of lifestyle.

Man, looks like these kids aren't going to learn a fucking thing about life at the exact time when they should be.
If their parents are rich and pass on the rules of wealth they won't have to.

I hope your clients understand what a fantastic deal you are cutting them at $120 per shoot. Unless they are 45 minute shoots and you are getting 4-5 per day it's a very tough way to make a living.

My parents bought me a house to live in when I was in school in San Francisco. Cost 400k, sold for 800k 5 years later. Looks like its currently worth around 1.5 million.

the bricks look hideous. i dont know why they dont cover that up with sheet rock.
overall, the photos look really good! great job!

Some of my clients are filthy rich. I'm talking Mideast royalty rich. I've been to their homes.

Most you guys have no idea how the super wealthy live. It's insane. To them, that is a minimalist pauper's dorm room.

Many of my relatives are rich not royalty rich but in the 100 millions. I have one relative in the forbes 400 billionaire. You are right they don't know how the super wealthy live. I keep telling my friends that.

I feel underpaid 🙂 But it is the market rate around here. Shoots are generally around 45 minutes and my target is to have 3 shoots per day 3 days per week and 4 shoots per day 2 days a week. Work to live and all.

The most I ever made on staff as a newspaper shooter was about $26k/year back pre-2000. The job came with a generous mileage allowance, basic company photo gear, access to exotic pool gear I could never have afforded, and other opportunities to make money shooting gigs on the side, but the base pay sucked. When I was first starting out the photogs on staff would fight over the assignments that included lunch or dinner because we couldn't pass up a free meal. And we were mostly there because we loved what we did and the excitement of newspaper work with the pro sports, crime and other fun assignments. The most enjoyable assignments for me were the ones where I met interesting folks and got to tell their unusual stories. It was definitely a job that opened up my myopic view on life when I was first starting out.

I only left when my third child was born and just couldn't afford to work the long, odd hours for such low pay. I still kick myself thinking if I'd worked harder I could have got on at one of the larger Los Angeles daily papers where the pay would have supported my family better.

But I had many years of fun getting paid to do what many would do practically for free.

Really?
