Google apps wouldn't install as an update.zip? What recovery are you using? I did it with RaidZero on 3 phones.

Didn't try it that way. Tried installing a the gapps zip file in the recovery and in the OS via the file explorer(said the file was not available, well I'm looking right at it?!?). Flashed CM7 back it the exact same file installed fine through the file explorer. This version of CM7 is working much better than the 7.1RC. I'm pretty happy with it right now. Thinking of installing chevy's kernal again....

CM7 but now back to CM6.1.2. Someone started porting CM7 features back to CM6 on the Milestone thread and now I'm back.

Froyo is 10x faster than GB on the old Droid/Milestone platform. 256mb is too little memory. The problem with GB is simply memory. While your device can boot ok, I bet after a day it will be unusable. I had so many issues taking my phone on vacation and trying to do navigation. Google maps would stall/lag/lockup a LOT. It was always fine after boot, so I had to remember to reboot everyday.

CM6 was snappy as hell though. Glad I'm back. I applied the GB theme though :)

I'm quite happy with my config. I attempt to compensate for the low memory.
CM7 nightly 125 w/ Peter Alfonso's .3 Kernel 800 LV ondemand, compcache @ 26%, VM heap @ 32mb, JIT enabled, surface dither disabled, lock msg app in memory, allow purging of assets.

I have a friend who lets me tinker with his Droid 1. I have MIUI with P3's froyo low voltage kernel that goes from 125mhz to 1.25 ghz. Whats sad is that the Droid seems to be staying stable at that speeds MUCH better than my Droid X.

Liquid Thundersense 1.6 with imoseyon's lean kernel on normal profile. It works fine, so I'm unwilling to update my radio to try GB releases.

Mine isn't a droid but it is android. Samsung epic no rom as I just took out the stock crap on my own. No kernel as I am using gb which isn't official yet so no source from samsung.

I'm on CM7 but not happy with it. From random reboots, to slowdowns, to lag, to having to reboot my phone to get it to do what I want (like looking up something on G Maps).

I'm going to totally wipe the phone and try CM7 again I think, see what happens.

I'd be interested to hear your experience after a full wipe. Granted, I believe I did the equivalent of a full wipe, but I still have major issues with CM7.

Just recently, answered a phone call that randomly went to speaker, but the caller could not hear me. Speaker wasn't actually turned on though. Then, called back and it worked ok. Then the phone basically locked up, came back up for a second, went back to being locked, then rebooted.

Heck, at least with Alfonso's ROMs, the worst problem I ever had was that the camera wouldn't work. That was corrected when I updated to GPA15. Then I decided to tinker, and I have to say I am becoming less and less impressed with CM7.

Might give MIUI another whirl.

You guys having trouble with CM7, have you tried fixing permissions?

Not sure about permissions...

Running it on a Droid 1, and it just seems to hang here and there. Eventually locking up and rebooting.

CM7 nightlies (update once a week or so) and Tiamat SBC 4.0.5 kernel. Runs like a champ, though I am experiencing the whole unresponsive power button thing. Basically I have to hold the power button down to turn the phone on at times. I've read that it has something to do with undervoltage.

D1, hang ups, lock ups, reboots, etc. Not sure if this wipe and reinstall will fix it, but I'll know in a day or two most likely.

I use CyanogenMod 7.1 RC1 with Peter Alfonoso's V0.3 Kernel @ 1ghz.

I find that Alfonso's kernels work quite well for Droid 1s.

Go into ROM manager and there is an option to " Fix Permissions" (this is assuming you're using CWM)

Well, while I would have done that... I ended up doing a full wipe and loading the latest version of MIUI. I have to say, I am pretty impressed with MIUI. So far, 100% stable and the faintest bit of sluggishness.

While I may be whining about something that is free, I cannot seem to understand why CM7 cannot include gapps by default when all the others do. And why it can't simply work from a clean load like all the others do (mostly minus a bug here or there). It does sound like that is one of the more popular ROMs, but I really have reloaded it several times, and never gotten a good impression.

Alfonso didn't release many updates, which lead me to search elsewhere, but his latest GPA15 was working quite well for me. I just can't see how CM has trouble doing the most simple of tasks.

Let me know how MIUI works for you. I'm going to move from CM7 I think. I have never had a "good" experience with CM. I did have a great experience with Kangerade, but don't see a new version :(

From the CyanogenMOD Wiki:

Google Apps contain the proprietary Google applications that come pre-installed with most android devices. Due to licensing restrictions, these apps cannot come pre-installed with CyanogenMod and must be installed separately

As for the problems you've had I can't speak for everyone but I've had 2 phones, a G1 and a now G2, and have never had a problem with CM. Some phones do have issues running GB especially the original Droid, CM7 for it was delayed quite a while because they hard a hard time getting it to work correctly.

CM still doesnt work for me. It was so bad I started lookingat used Pre's for a cheap replacement. Last night i wiped again and loaded chevy's rom. Wow, what a difference. Almost no lag and everything is smooth as butter. It has a 1ghz option built in, is there any pressing reason to load another kernal? I finally think i have a setup that will last until I upgrade in a couple months.

I guess my question on this is how is it that others include it and somehow they can't. I take it the others aren't following the rules?

As for me and CM7, I am going to be willing to bet it's a Droid 1 issue. Probably the lack of RAM, as it seems to be jest fine for a day, and then the next is a chugging and clugging along.

I was liking MIUI, until yesterday. Figured I'd put my phone to the test on a simple navigation to a local park. First it worked, then it went to sleep. Brought it back from sleep, and the nav had closed on me. Was sluggish, but finally got it back to nav, but it didn't keep the old address. Later that night, I went to check voice mail, and it stalled a bit when I was attempting to enter my password.

Well, Alfonso released his 2.3.4 release, so I'll just go ahead and give that a go. Hopefully it is lean and clean enough to run okay on this old Droid.

I am dying to get my hands on something different, but I would like the Samsung "Function" or Droid Bionic to show up before I do anything. And that is seeming more and more like a waiting game I'll never win.

I'm using Pete's GPA16, have been running the betas. Works fine, looks decent, some lag here and there, waiting for my upgrade in December to abandon ship and switch to WP7, hopefully with a nice Nokia camera included ;)

Plus I wonder if Android could astound everyone and be sued out of existence as quickly as it rose :(

BUMP!

Need the best current instructions for rooting Droid 1. After am done will need best ROM for using it as a standalone media player. Mostly MP3's. I guess thats probably CM7.

Now that I have my HD7 as a regular phone I dont need the Droid for anything else.
