I would like to upgrade to a 21" CRT monitor. I would like to spend $500-600. The main model I am looking at is the SONY CRT MONITOR CPD-E540 which is avaiable for $525. Could anyone recommend a better 21"? Also I heard there are 2 lines down the middle of the screen, can anyone tell me exactly how visible?

those lines are on all trinitron monitors.....they are noticable with very light backgrounds (eg: writing documents in Word, etc), but over time you get used to them so you don't really see them anymore.

Those trinitron lines are so exagerated. Even when people say they're not noticeable, it's hard to understand just how NOT noticeable they are. I saw them when I bought the monitor and I haven't seen them since. Even on the white AT background, I can't find them. I wouldn't even factor them into a buying choice unless you have superb vision and you have some perfectionist issues.

21" Dell Trinitron is what I have. Suits above and beyond for all my purposes, gaming and surfing primarily. Very cheap (I got it for $350 CDN shipped).

I definitely can recommend a better monitor.

A SONY G-520 or G-520P....Zeee G is better than the E. Of course the F is better than the G but is a whole lot more money.
The P version has a silver and grey designer case. The non P uses a light grey case.
You can get a G520 or G520P for around $650-$.$675 Maybe less depending on sales. Some dude here got one for $519 in December.

When you go down to the E540 you get a lot more competiton. More like the ones Sony sells to all the OEMs.

As for the lines....they don't bother me.

how's the rma service of various monitor companies? do they all charge for the shipping? do they send out a replacement monitor or do they make you wait while they try your busted one.

I owned a Sony E540 loved it !! But I got rid of it for a Samsung 191T due to the amount of heat that monitor generates.

You can get the CPD-E540 in white or black at Dell Home for $510 shipped right now, a very good price on a nice monitor.
