What 2.1 speakers would be about this good or better?

I've currently got a pair of Altec Lansing ACS400 satellites (2 3" midranges and 1 0.5" dome tweeter each) with an ACS250 8" powered subwoofer. What modern speakers would have comparable quality? I'd like to get my dad something better than what he has, but not too expensive (<$100). 5.1 and 7.1 setups aren't really practical for his computer's location.

not sure if my suggestion is an improvement on that setup(think that setup might be good..not sure tho) but check this thread here.
