Wha could cause network slowdown?

Hello all
I am wondering if someone could help me with this.
I have a Dell Poweredge server, when I have it connected to DSL modem I have no issues with speeds. When I connect it to a SMC Router/Cable modem on Cable modem service I have slow speeds (less then a meg). At the same time when I connect a notebook or a PC to the same SMC router I have no issues with speeds (get about 22 megs). To me it appears it has to do with some incompatibility on the Dell network card vs the SMC router (which has a 4 port switch built in).
All these tests prove that it is not the cable modem issue, and everything points to the Dell server running Windows 2K Server OS.

Any ideas?

Thank you

P.S. The cable modem is WAY faster then the DSL, hence the reason for switching.
This is a business tier of service by the way.

Make sure the switch and server network card are set to autonegotiate speed and duplex. Also try a different, store bought patch cable.

Cable problems or a duplex mismatch (forced to full on one end, auto on the other) normally drop throughput dramatically to around 1-2 Mbs.
