So, I'm looking at a 50" and a 55" Westinghouse from Best Buy:

I'd be upgrading from a 42" 720p Sony LCD projection set from about 2008...I would consider a set as small as 46", but strongly prefer 50"+. This is a stretch for my budget, but those look like good prices and good reviews. Picture quality is the most important thing...I don't need a lot of features, and I use external speakers.

I know these aren't the best out there, but I can't afford the best. Would one of these be a big upgrade from what I have now, enough to hold me for a few years? Is there a must-have feature on these newer TVs which I wouldn't think of? Any info would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Good size for the price. Only thing that gives me caution is you have had that old TV since 2008 and we are SO close to Black Friday.

I just bought a westinghouse for my folks. It was a 42" at Target for $250 (less 5% with the target red card). It's an ok TV, but while setting it up there were numerous scenes from Avatar and other areas where I felt the picture quality wasn't all that good. My mom likes it, and doesn't notice that type of thing.

That said, I did hit up dealnews.com one day while looking for a TV for myself, and stumbled upon a 48" Sony at Walmart for $349. That TV is great for me. Picture is good, and does all I need it to.

Like Poofy said, Black Friday is just around the corner. I would simply keep an eye on the deals sights for now. If you find something that is a good brand and a good price, snatch it up. Elsewise wait for BF.

All that said, if you like the looks of the TV and the image quality, they seem ok. I dunno if the cable I used was junk or what, but I just had what I had when I set it up for them and it seemed pretty meh. The cable was a very thin diameter, so I may try a different cable next time I see them.

My mom was out on Thanksgiving night (after our dinner and everything) last year with my oldest son and they bought a Westinghouse 55" from Target for $199 . We had an older 720p 50 set, so when she called and asked if I wanted her to get it, I said what the hell! That said, it's actually been a very decent set for bedroom use and we've had no issues.

I'm with the others, wait for BF if you can.

Then again, most of the models that are on "sale" on BF, are specially-produced, cost-reduced, Made In China models that they are shipped especially for BF. So you may not actually want one of those.

That said, I picked up an Insignia 39.5" LCD HDTV at BB on BF a few years back for $250, sold it to a friend of mine after a year, because I no longer had room for it.

My main HDTV is a 32" Westinghouse, that must be 8 years old by now. It's still going, but sometimes, when the power glitches, I have to unplug it to reset the firmware. It also has massive burn-in.

I bought a 47" Westinghouse about ~4 years ago and still use it as my main TV. There have been zero issues. I use external speakers as well - the internal ones are pretty much junk. I bought the TV in store (Best Buy) and the picture was much better than any other TV in it's price range hanging on the wall. My requirements was a USB slot and 2 or more HDMI slots. This fit the bill perfectly. Good luck.

Thanks for all the input. The price dropped again with a referral link I found somewhere, and I grabbed the 55" model for $430 with tax. There's some LED clouding, but I can live with it, because overall the picture is WAAAAAAY better than my old TV's. A connoisseur would probably want something better, but for what I paid, I'm very happy. Also, I'm really glad I went for the 55" instead of the 50"...it's not overkill at all.

Note: the base is really big. I measured 12" x 26".
