My older laptop external drive I used for backup died (warranty expired), so I must buy a new one to back up "important" programs stored in my 840EVO and 4TB WD Black. Is the 1TB Blue reliable? I heard some good things about it, but will it last for 5-6 years? The 1TB in the case or buying an enclosure is cheaper than buying an external itself

I use the same drive through eSATA as a backup and its been flawless.

5-6 years might be pushing it, though. Buy a Black/Velociraptor if you really need a 5 year warranty.

you're better off storing important stuff online and in multiple places.

Ayah, I agree with you as there are a lot of options to find a cloud storage and keep the data there and if you wish you can back it up to HDD, an USB, tapes or to the cloud. At least I do like this with Acronis.

Like someone else already said. I think I have at least two of the 1TB Blue drives. Had them running on my server flawlessly, and now they're in hot-swap caddies for backups. I have a 320GB Blue as a boot drive on a "strickly bidnis" system.

I think I got one which was DOA, and the Egg was quick to deliver the good one. Once in a while, you get one of the defectives outside the QC margin. No telling much whether that speaks ill of the product, without looking at other instances and the entire sample of reviews.

Not really... NE has a Seagate 1TB portable on sale for $60 this AM... nice thing about the portables (as opposed to an external) is they are USB3.0 and are powered through the USB cord.

I think this began to evolve with enthusiast-users looking for extra mileage from spare hard disks, and mainstreamers seeking better backup solutions than optical discs. The mainstreamers don't much have "spare hard drives" and don't want to trouble themselves.

So it seemed at one time there were a lot of "external boxes" with USB connection available for the enthusiasts or folks with the spare drives.

It is nice to know that you can get an external USB 3 unit powered entirely through the USB connection.

The price differential for the older USB DIY boxes wasn't that much: a good well-designed box might cost $50. You might have spent closer to $100 if the product included the HDD.

I bought my first Seagate portable by pure dumb luck... I've bought 2 more since and planning on replacing the original 500GB with a 1TB soon. I'm about ready to junk my external drive box... I have a HDD cradle I can use if I need to spool up a drive externally.
