Western Digital Warranty

It has long been my understanding that when Western Digital cut their warranty on hard drives to one year, the SE drives were the exception, and they still had a 3-year warranty. Then I had one fail on me the other day and the WD Web site tells me the drive is out of warranty. The label has a manufacture date of Oct. 2003. On the phone they said it was a 1-year warranty based on that serial number. Anybody have any similar experiences?
 
True but maybe your SE edition is Retail which requires an addition purchase to extend it to 3...
 
If it's not retail and you can show prove then I would definitely contact them...Good Luck!
 
yes , I bought one of those and was suprised it had a one year warrentty but also with the option to buy xtra warrenty. Drive died in one month. took it back for store credit but after rebates had only paid 35.00 for it anyway.
I guess now I know why it was on sale.

Try asking Newegg where the 3 year warranty went. Maybe they know why it doesn't have the full warranty? It couldn't hurt to ask.
 
I live in the UK and I don't get this iffy 3,6month warrenty business on some of my electrical stuff. Always a 1 minimum.

On my WE SE drives I get 3yrs.

I just had a similar problem. I purchased one of the Circuit City WD2000JB drives (they were $100 after rebate, with a Promise card included, and mislabeled on the box as 160GB). The drives date is July 16, 2003 but WD says it's a Dell OEM so the warranty is expired. Wish I had the packaging and receipt for this one still....
 
OEM's are 3yrs while retail has only 1yr and I believe it's from the time that is marked on the HD...
 
When I bought mine 2 years ago the JB's had a 3 year warranty, it was marked on the package. Really wish I could find that receipt. Anyone else tried to warranty one of these yet? (From the Circuit City deal).

My 2 WD Caviar SE drives OEM both came with 4 years warranty according to the Western Digital Check-it-yourself warranty checker.

I purchased 1 of those 2 years ago and the other around 6 months ago. Factoring that it to the time I have left, the website told me I was given 4 years.

Go figure I guess. Ive given up on trying to understand manufacturers.

Wow, that's screwed up. WD had one of their retail-packaged HDs, listed as a Dell OEM? Oops. Sorry to hear that. Btw, did you purchase a WD JB drive, with the controller included, recently? They stopped bundling controller cards with their retail drives back in late 2003. (I know - I bought one of the last 160GB WD JB drives at BB, with a controller and three-year warranty - two years ago!). The fact that you apparently were able to find one still, is mind-boggling. 🙂

Edit: I checked both of mine, soon after I picked that one up, and both had three-year warranty + a few months. I guess I should re-check them, and make sure that WD's warranty database hasn't gotten too corrupted or something.
 
VirtualLarry, it was about 2 years ago that I bought mine. Could you check one of yours, see if it still shows up as warrantied? I just want to know if mine is an isolated problem, in which case I'm SOL.
