Does anyone have one yet ? How much of a difference do you feel ? Seems like it gives SCSI almost a run for its money in multitasking. Well it is not as good as SCSI but close.

I have one, it's really fast, cool (31C, ambient 26C) & quiet. I can definitely feel a difference. It even improved my boot times by a few more seconds, I think it takes longer to go through the BIOS screens than to boot Vista now.

Here's my personalSandra disk benchmarks.:D

The benchmark results for all the drives in my sig are there. As you can see it absolutely smokes everything else, including the RAID setup used for reference.

Thanks what was your previous hard drive? Trying to see if it would be worth going to a WD VelociRaptor from a Raptor 150 gig.

My Raptor 150GB and my Hitachi 7K1000 750GB results are on there as well, those are my results. The Seagate drive and the RAID array are Sandra provided results used for reference.

I saw that but can you feel a big enough difference between your Raptor 150 GB to your VelociRaptor 300 GB that you think it was worth the upgrade?

Not for my 74 to 300 swap. I didn't figure that it would, but I wanted the VelociRaptor anyway.

It's almost a given WD will be releasing a 74 and 150GB VelociRaptors. If you really don't need the space, wait for the 74 gigger for a boot drive.

That's my next move.

For the cost of the Veliciraptor I would go SAS. Alot faster when setup properly and depending on the card not much more.

I can feel the difference, it's not huge because the old HDD's were also fast. But the PC is even more responsive than before. And it takes longer to go through the various BIOS screens than it does to boot Vista.

You should go for the VelociRaptor for sure if you're running the old, slow Raptor.
It would probably be a night & day difference from your elderly HD.

Is there two different versions of the 150 GB Raptor with one being slower than the other you are saying?

My vote is you wait for the 74 or 150s and let us see the benchmarks.

When they release the smaller versions, the price is gonna drop drastically on the 300s!

Why do you say that ? I can't see how the price will drop drastically after they release the smaller versions.

There is only one version of the 150GB Raptor... The old, slow version. The VelociRaptor is the FAST VERSION.

Thats what I thought but you made it seem like the 150 GB Raptor is 10 times as slow as the VelociRaptor which is not the case. It is slower but not by a huge margin.

For some reason I don't believe you and its my gut feeling telling me, which is most of the time right. I will test it out first before buying one.

Well for size, the new drive is great and it should boost speeds a bit, but my pron collection is quite small and only need the 150gb space ;) ......... because I delete of all the uglies as the new ones come in

In with the new, out with the old!

You listen to your gut and not the entire AT family?
Explain how you'd pull off a "try before buy" on the VelociRaptor?

i have two of the first raptor drives (37.7 gigs). yeah i jumped on that band wagon early and i love the drives. i bought a 150gb raptor and honestly didn't see much of a difference at all. so i returned it. but these new velociraptors are supposed to be incredible and all the reviews love em...don't think you could go wrong

This VelociRaptor is a pound the table bargain!

People say $1 per GB is high...
How about $20 per GB? My first HD was a 10GB 5400 rpm IBM @ $200.

What's the noise level on these?

I've got two 74's in my system now and Vista's crunching after boot-up is driving me insane.

I started with a pair of 36's that are still going strong in the "server" at my wife's office. Moved to the 74's for myself. I would move to a VelociRaptor if/when they are smaller as I don't need that much storage. Too pricey for me at the current size. But it would have to be quieter than what I have now.
