i sent in a 2 year old WD1500ADFD (the old 3.5", 2x 75gb platters kind) for RMA service.

i get sent back a WD1500HLFS (the new 2.5", single 150gb platter kind) as replacement.

manufacture date 9th of October, 2009. (so i'm guessing brand new drive.)

woohoo :)

they generally refurbish drives.

it's been stated as such.

of course they're not gonna send back my specific old drive... but generally they dump it into a pool of "to be repaired", and draw from the pool of "have been repaired" to send back as warranty replacement.

They don't?

I thought they would open them up and mill them down to a new finish. Kinda like brake rotors. :p

The 150GB are 2.5" but are in a 3.5" housing/adapter.

I've had it either way from Seagate. New or with a big green refurb sticker on it.

Seagate has completely given up when it comes to RMA, you don't even have to answer any questions.

hey i should warranty my 74GB ADFD raptor then and get a new one... wonder what'd happen... but there is no new gen 74gb raptor =[.

You got a nice upgrade.

When my 7200.8 died I asked for a 7200.9. Not much speed difference unfortunately except SATA II capabilities.

I think the OP is wondering why he didn't get the same model back. He got an upgrade. It's like sending back your Pentium 4 and getting an i7 in the mail back. Hey I'd take that...

dont you see "woohoo"? i know i'm lucky to get an upgrade :)

the HLFS is vastly superior to the ADFD.

to the person with the 74 gig raptor. it may work. there was an 80 GB HLFS version released, just not publicly released. they called it "build to order". i'm guessing it's a short-stroked 150gig version.

I would be pissed because I'd need to upgrade the rest of my computer.

lol, i didnt have to answer any questions either. i did call them because i saw that it had to be shipped in an anti-static bag. (keyword, Bag.) I called to ask if a plastic clamshell that i'd had other harddrives shipped to me would be okay... and i got some indian guy that didnt speak hardly any english tell me bag only. :/.

Not surprised... WD has maybe the best RMA/Customer around imo.

Never had a problem sending them a dead drive even at the edge of warranty (perhaps even a little past at times, don't remember) and getting back a brand new one, fast.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but like Sonny said, I think they are 2.5" in a bigger housing for cooling and quietness.

That model they sent is a 3.5" http://www.wdc.com/en/products/products.asp?driveid=499

"IcePack mounting frame: the 2.5-inch WD VelociRaptor is enclosed in a backplane-ready 3.5-inch enterprise-class mounting frame with a built-in heat sink."

No. It's a 2.5" drive in a 3.5" enclosure.

Yes but they also have a 2.5" drive: http://www.wdc.com/en/products/products.asp?driveid=496

you take my post too literally. of course the mounting structure is 3.5", but the drive itself is 2.5".

there's no difference between the drive you posted and the drive i recieved, aside from a mounting frame. (that can easily be removed.)

Not to rain on your parade, but the cost of replacing it was covered in the premium you paid for them. Still cool nonetheless, although they certainly did so as it was cost effective for them as well. Gotta love technological progress that makes it cheaper for the company to give the newer stuff as replacements.

LOL yeah ... but to send me a new velociraptor would half piss me off because I have huge archives of videos and photos and I'm throwing out the old 300gb drives and putting 1TB drives in. i'm at the point where I feel my 74GB ADFD is slow enough (well more like the new drives are fast enough) where I *CAN* replace it with my 1TB Caviar Black or perhaps the new Caviar 2TB rather than keeping a small 74gb wasting 1/4 physical slots. To send me a velociraptor would force me to keep it... but hey it's faster right? Hahaha.. Glad you got an upgrade.

Now that you remind me I have an old 250gb 7200.9 w/ 5 year warranty. I've tossed it to the side ever since it started failing (damn unreliable series) because it's in my parents' computer and I have 7200.10s that I've thrown out that I've just simply given them instead. Maybe that 250gb is worth sending back to see if they give me a newer replacement. Hehehe.
