Sent in 2 WD800 drives May 25th at 4pm. Western Digital processed a shipment for 2 new ones back to me on May 27th. Since it was the weekend, they ended up arriving at 1pm on Tuesday May 31st. Overall it took only 4 business days for the entire RMA process. I am not sure how other companies like Maxtor and Seagate are with respect to ease and speediness of service but this was excellent in my eyes.

My question is:

The 2 drives are identical in model # -- WD800JB - 00CRA1. One is made in Malaysia, the other in Thailand. I need to use one of these in my computer for now. Is there any difference in long-term reliability based on where the hard drive was made? (Both Made on May 27th it says).

I remember reading that there was a difference in drives and where they were made (e.g. number of platters) but I can't remember it offhand. If I find it I'll post it here.

Actually no. I live in Canada. So when I did the Standard Replacement RMA online, it automatically told me what location to send it to in Canada. But I am certain that if I lived in US and sent it to US WD location, then it would have been just as fast.

I just RMA'd a 74GB Raptor drive to WD. Sent it Thursday, they recieved it Friday, processed and shipped the replacement Monday and I had it in my hands Tuesday.

Their RMA building is less than 2 miles from my work here in CA so I expected it to be fast. I still had to FedEx the drive over to them. If only they had a drop-off place there. :p

Well I couldn't find what I was talking about earlier, all I could find was a discussion about Seagate drives made in China vs. those made in Thailand. So, never mind :p
