Finally, something new from WD!

WD is way overdue to upgrade the Black line (still stuck with 500 GB platters), and they’re due for a VelociRaptor refresh too since new versions come every 2 years.

Looks like 300 GB 2.5” platters to me, so this would be the perfect base to upgrade the VelociRaptor line. 204 MB/s and 7ms random access would make a nice 900 GB Raptor drive.

at 200MB/s write, going to make caching the drive (with a SSD) rather pointless

going to have to re-work out my drive situation. Currently a 80GB G2 OS, 600GB v'raptor for programs and a 2TB WD Black for storage. Where to put this new drive and that SSD I was looking at as a cache drive / temp drive

If I wasn't loaded to the gills with SSDs, and if I actually hoarded lots of data and cared about capacity, I might take a peek.

Not bad, hopefully the new platters make their way to the VR as well. Even with a much needed update, though, I don't really think the VelociRaptors will make sense for most people compared to SSD. A 128GB SSD can be had for like $150 and is "large enough" for most desktop users OS/programs drive while offering orders of magnitude greater IOPS than a 10kRPM drive. The VR kind of fills an increasingly small niche in the desktop space, which is users who want greater performance than a 7.2kRPM drive offers but need more space than you can affordably get with an SSD.

I think the Velociraptor has had its day, but SSDs still need time and cost reductions before they can replace speedy platter drives for businesses, so assuming it is priced right, it aught to sell well.

S25 is not exactly an enthusiast model number, now is it? T10 PI, FI, won't be something desktop users will care much about (though, frankly, is also something that strikes me as a problem who's best solution is better file systems, but that's JMHO).

I still run a 150GB Velociraptor for my main drive. Its been a great reliable drive. We have two computers with them.

Ive been waiting for SSD costs to drop. I cant say I really need more speed than what I get with this.

I really would like to see some benchies on these. Currently using 2.5" IBM 15000RPM SAS2 drives, but they only go up to 146GB. Fast as hell, but we're running into size issues, and I'm not looking forward to blowing 80 grand in order to fix it.

One thing that bothers me with spindle drives after using SSDs for so long is how much more I notice noise. The clicking and seeking, stopping..seeking.. during heavy activity is irritating.

I have a feeling that most users wouldn't notice it above all the fans.

And, for those users with stacks of pizza boxes: I HAVE A FEELING THAT MOST USERS WOULDN'T NOTICE IT ABOVE ALL THE FANS.

It looks like these new drives will have the same maximum transfer as Seagate’s 3 TB Barracuda, but you’ll get much lower access times and potentially faster minimum transfer speeds. They should be monster performers in mechanical space.

A 900 GB VelociRaptor would be perfect for my needs as my 361 GB gaming library is not viable to be stored on SSDs, especially since I need plenty of space for future expansion. When games go on sale I tend to buy a few at once.
