Western Digital -- Recent drives not built as well?

Maybe I'm an isolated case, but I've now had 2 WD hard drives fail on me in the last 3 months.

Drive 1 -- WD 100BB, failed after a year. This one had bad sectors, I was able to recover most of the data. Good thing I bought it when WD was still giving a 3 year warranty.

Drive 2 -- WD 160JB, failed after 3 months. I'm trying to run the WD Diagnostics and its giving me a SMART error, so I can't even diagnose the problem. I have this sinking feeling that I wont be able to recover any of the data from this drive.

Anyone else having problems recently with WD drives?

Oh well, off to install another drive and hopefully recover the data from my old drive....

it's just your luck. my 1200JB runs strong and quiet after 8 months, and preparig to install the 1200BB that still sits in a box

i just think their new boxes are UGLY. both maxtor and WD boxes are UGLY. i don't think the box affects the drive in any way though.

if you have a string of bad luck with one brand, maybe its time to try another, in the end though, its just luck

My WD drives have not been a problem. I have two old 13GB drives and two new 200GB drives. None have ever caused me any grief or failed in any way.

I'll think I'll complain about the nosie my WD400JB Makes, my friend even has a eary 30-GIG Model that is older than this one and makes less nosie!

My Western Digital drives have been flawless. I had a Maxtor prior to buying a bunch of WD drives and it was so loud when it seeked. Click!! Click!! The motor was ok, but the clicking drove me nuts. The WD's were whisper quiet for nearly a year and I just had one 1200JB drive start to whine and ring on me. I don't find it acceptable, so I'm RMA'ing it.

If I have another WD drive do this on me, I'll probably try Seagate next time.

Recent Western Digitals have been the noisiest of the bunch according to ears and dB meter tests. Some people simply cant pick the sound out because of noisy fans.

At this point, I could care less about sound, I just want a drive that wont fail on me!

I think all of the data is lost, I definitely cant boot from the drive, it just hangs. I can boot from another hard drive, but my computer wont boot if this drive is hooked up to ANY channel on my hard drive. The drive also makes some horrid crunching noises. This is even worse than when my last drive crashed, at least I was able to put it on another channel and transfer the data from one drive to another.

Of course the spare drive I have right now is the one I got back from RMAing the WD 100 gig. Hopefully it wont fail on me now.

Seagate or Maxtor will be my next choice I think.

How's your cooling with those drives? Even my 80G 5400 drive gets pretty warm...almost as warm as my small 10K drive. I can only imagine that those fatty drives@7200 run pretty toasty.

I think my cooling is pretty good. I have a Lian Li case and the 2 hard drives are mounted in the drive cage at the bottom. There are 2 80mm fans blowing directly on to the drives, 1 exhaust, and 1 blowhole too. The drives have never been hot at all when I've checked em.

I guess I can just chalk it up to bad luck I think. I really can't think of what else could screw with it, maybe my power supply. I have an Enermax 430W, and the 12v rail does seem a bit low (11.77), but the rest of the rails seem to be in good shape. Not even sure if 11.77 is really that out of spec for the 12v rail.

I have an 80 gb wd drive and it is loud. I will not be buying another western digital drive in the near future because of my experience with my current drive.

I've never had any problems with WD drives in any of my machines. Currently there is a 1000JB and an older 20Gb in my main system, and a 600JB in my gaming system. Both the JB drives are quiet and fast!

I bought a 200 GB external WD hard drive. The first after about 3 months, the RMA after about 4. The second one was literally like 4 days ago. Huh, I wish I had the money to buy 2 of them so I could have one for backup. Its so depressing losing everything.

You think your's is loud... you should hear an old Quantum Bigfoot TX 12 GB drive that I have. It's a 5 1/4 inch drive... and I swear, with the case sitting on the desk, you can FEEL the hard drive seek if you're resting your hand on the desk.

only drive that poo'd on me were the ibm deathstars..

i have seagate, maxtor, and wd, all have been good to me..

no prefrence still.

I guess my 12V rail is within spec then. I can't really think of what else could have caused my drive to crash. I have a 1200VA UPS with AVR so even if there was a power spike of some sort I should be protected. This problem did start after I had a power outage though, but is that a coincidence? None of my other hardware is having any problems...
