Western Digital Raptor

Well now I've been really thinking, that if I'm going to be building a SLI system with a AMD X2 CPU, running two 7800 GT cards, then to me it makes sense to run the fastest SATA drive available and that seems to be the Raptor.

But let's face it these things aren't cheap. So I guess you just set up like two in Raid-0 and only have great gaming performance and the running of all the applications installed, other then that, I would have another SATA drive for storing movies and mp3s on, for this I'll use a Seagate Barracuda 7200.9 ST3300622AS 300GB Serial ATA 7200RPM Hard Drive w/16MB, then you're just going to be running at a more normal speed for a SATA for these movies and mp3s I take, yes?

Any input here would be appreciated.

Personally I think getting two SATA 2 hard drives with 16MB of cache and RAID'ing them is money better spent.

Or,

Wait for the SATA 2 w/ 16MB of cache ~140GB Raptor to come out.

140GB when?

No idea on the new Raptor. It was just a rumor I heard. (I think on the forums somewhere)

Ok well I have a timeline, the box is for a Science Fair due in January, so I need to get it done in the next 2 weeks.

I think for now I'll snag one of the 74gb Raptors and I'll either slap in the 300GB 16mb buffer Seagate or the 500gb bad boy as the storage drive.

That 76Gb will hold quite a few games, LOL 😉

THANKS

Forget about RAID-0. It offers no performance advantage in most cases (including gaming) and significantly reduces reliability. Just get a single Raptor and a large and cheap drive for storage.

Yeah I'm not going to mess with the Raid.

THANKS

Well, I got a 74gb raptor as my system/apps/game drive for 140 off of the FS/FT forums, and I couldn't be happier.

BF2 Loading times were cut in half - at LEAST. All other games load in a snap. I think the money was well spent. Many people who advise against buying raptors do not own one themselves.
