I wish I had $80. I would so get that 120GB S-ATA, this one even has the new quiet bearing I believe. Anyone have any HD Stress Testing or benchmarking programs to test a HD too see if its defective or just benchmark it?

Are these just customer returns I wonder. How much can you really refurb a HD? I think I will pass & get brand new @ $0.50 a GB or less on a hot deal. Thanks for the heads up though, didn't realize they do the HD's as well as the video cards.

All refurbished parts are considered OEM BAREBONE!.

I just snagged 4 of the Seagate 120 GB SATA drives (refurbs) from them, $81/ea shipped! Those are like $103/ea new on the net, so I saved $88, nice. I've ordered half a dozen refurbs from them, not a single one has given me issues. 😀

I am running a 3 YO 40 Gig 7200 I think its a SE drive no funny sounds but a friend who bought the one right next to mine BOOOOOMMMM. I have had great luck with my Westerns though.

I just don't know. Some things are worth buying refurbished I suppose, but hard drives? High-speed, sensitive magnetic devices one trusts their data to?

I totally agree. While the majority of refurb parts are actually completely functional customer returns that are almost new, sometimes you get stuff that is old and appears like it was in someones computer for a few years. These are pretty rare, but it happens. I recently got burned on an external CDRW drive. This was a real small Liteon drive with a totally propreitary power connection that used something like an S-video jack. The power supply didn't ship with the drive, nor any instructions, so there is no way I could even power the drive up to test it.

Can't seem to get the link to open. Newegg has been a reliable source for me for refubs. I'm cool with um, you take a chance, but everytime I have been happy and richer. If something is fishy then it can always be sent back.

NE may only give 15 days but if you are wise in your purchase you can truly get a good deal even if you need to send it back to the manufacture for replacement. IE.. Bought a Sonata case awhile back for $50 delivered, dead PSU contact Antec, and a week later I am up and running, cost $6 to send them the PSU, total cost $56. Same can be said for Video Cards etc... WD Raptor HDD's come with 5 year warranty...

edit: most refurbished hard drives are simply hard drives that were returned for problems like not being able to format properly etc. and all that needed to be done was another low level format, before partitioning and formating the drive. sometimes if the control board goes out, it will be replaced (with the exact same model board) and the drive will be good as new. (done this several times to keep from having to restore from backup tapes)

don't give false information. here's an ex. of an oem with 3 year warranty.

Bought the "refurbed" 120GB Special Edition. It was relabeled by Western Digital as a refurb. It still had 2 years 9 months of Warranty left. It has been running in my new machine flawlessly, quiet, fast, and cool! So for the $35.00 savings I feel that I got a bargain! As usual, Newegg got it to my house in Georgia in 4 days!

Drive ran for about 4 hours then died and would never post in bios. Got advanced replacement from Western digital. New drive started making clicking sound and freezing up. Waiting on 3rd drive now. Thats what you get soemtimes buying refurbs. It's worth the risk.

refurbed was no good for this particular item. Locked up after 15 minutes of idle, and then i was forced to reboot, and WinXP pro would go corrupt. Had to reformat, and then tried it again and the same thing happened over and over. However, the retail version is recommended. Western Digital all the way!!!

Mine came sealed marked "refurbished" on the drive label. Makes all kinds of wierd clicking noises when idle. Also 1 1/2 years left on the warranty. I don't think it's worth the $30 discount for all this but to some people it may be.

I don't know. The WD prices are the same and even more expensive than you can find on new drives, after rebate. So why spend the more for a refurb? Only one that makes sense, IMO, would be the SATA seagate drive. The WDs are all over priced for new drives, let alone refurbs.

Your right. I crawled in that box and found it is a "Quantum Fireball 40GB Plus AE" (Was in another Manufactures box when I bought it Western or Maxtor, can't remember now). My SE drive is a 80 and much newer. Which kinda makes me feel a little bit worried that I just bought 2 of the SE's. Hmmmm on the plus side I can now say that the Quantum Fireball is a fine drive for longivity lol. Ignorance WAS bliss. TY GtPrOjEcTX, although now I am kinda paranoid.

It does NOT have to be a retail drive for it to have a 3 yr warranty. These days, only the SE models, either OEM OR Retail come with 3 year warranty and the Raptor comes with 5 yr.

I wouldn't trust my data on a refurb drive personally. But if you have the time to test out the drives for a coupel days, you might score a good deal on a HD that somebody returned just cause they didnt like it, or couldn't set it up or whatever.
