Western Digital HD back from the dead?!?!?!

My friends WD HD died on him, for some unknown reason...at the time. When we tried to format the HD it said something about a bad sector 0 or so.

Well well well, he RMA'ed the HD and 3 days later he recieved the HD and a disk with a utility inside.

It seems like HDs from time to time may go down on you, and give you the message when trying to do the format c: that it has bad sectors. This should be due to fact that the firmware in the HD f*ck-up.

Anyway the utility he recieved was a firmware update for his HD. So if it do anything like that again he just uses that utility.

Have you ever heard of that???.

It works...And IMO it's really great.

Non of you have heard about it?!?!?!.

If you have do you know if there exists such utilities for other HDs like the IBM???

AoD 😛

Hmmmm
So if you have a Maxtor and Scandisk or Format reports a bad sector you can run this firmware update and it will completly fix it?
What you seem to be saying is that the H.D. doesn't really have a bad sector it's just the Firmware/Software in the drive controller that's screwed up....
Could be great for any Maxtor owners (like myself) who might get bad sectors and with this avoid an RMA.
Is it downloadable?

If there was ever any physical damage, I don't think a firmware update would do anything.

You could have probably just downloaded a zero-fill utility or something along those lines and fixed it that way... What exactly did the utility on the disk you received do?

BTW, I hate those damn 5400rpm Maxtor drives... They are quiet, but slow, I'll take my coffee-machine of a Quantum LM over that any day. 😛

You guys do realize Maxtor makes AWESOME 7200 RPM hard drives right? Mine is very quiet and very fast. Prertty cheap too. Got my 15 gig for $115 three months ago.

The Maxtor EZ-athome HDD refurb kit?

I hope word of this does not spread (it will make PC ServiceSource's stock dip even lower) 😛

The guy who send it back told us that...ups majot mistake, I said Maxtor but it was a WD :|. Sorry, anyway he said that it was a normal malfunction and that every place where you could RMA it to have such a utility. This saves the companies lots of dollars in RMA-cost and so forth.

RSI: Sorry I don't know much about it, that's why I asked. But Often the RMA-guy said. Nothing really wrong with the HD, unless you dropped it or so. More likely it's a sort of error in the Firmware.

AoD 😛

i guess the RMA dude did not bother to use the utility himself, since that would've meant if it did not work, he was stuck 😛

interesting note...

now how the hell was the firmware screwed up 😛 😉
