I have a WD 5.1G and 45G drive and I think they are quieter than Maxtors. If it is making really LOUD noises it might be dying.

its not a loud buzzing type noise, it is like "CLICK CLICK CLICK" whenever it is being read or written

there a way to test if it is dying?

bump

thanks

I have an Expert 9 and 20.5 and they both click. You can do an online diagnostic test of your drive on the WD web page.

I have 30GB and a 40GB WD ATA-100 and they're super quite, I also have 20GB and I notice that WD is much quieter then the IBM one.

Is the clicking really loud? My parents have an IBM drive that started making clicking noises, and then just went away. Although, the clicking sounded like trying to flush a toilet with an empty "tank". It was a very "hollow" like thump actually.

I also would suggest getting the diagnostic tools from WD, and testing out your drive.

The click of death. Check out the western digital web site forum and quickly back up anything you have that you want to save. This clicking sound means trouble. I have one that clicks as soon as the power is put to it and the motherboard will not accept it. Not a good sign.
