This is the model in question: WDXC1200BBRNN

URL: WDXC1200BBRNN

I have a friend who is selling one, but it is only 2MB cache, i would like to be able to open it and swap it. Does anyone know if this is possible? Thanks to all

Edit, I meant as in to install a larger capacity drive later on 🙂

um its not possible. once the platters are exposed to air, they will be damaged, because the space inside the harddrive is air tight and if 1 single piece of dust gets on it, you will not be able to clean it off and the harddrive will not be read properly.

not sure, but if you are going to just use it to back up data and what not, the extra cache is not going to make much of a difference at all

Ohh, see i thought they just installed internal drives on an external box, I had no idea it was the actual platters inside. lol 🙂

Mik3y misunderstood you ELopes. Yes, you should be able to replace the drive in the enclosure. I have an old WD external firewire drive that I took apart and plug different drives into. Didn't even have to be WD drives, Maxtor and Quantum drives worked as well. Swapping the drive out for an 8MB cache version would seem to be a waste of time though. You won't really see much of a benefit from doing that since the onboard bridges are already slower than the sustained throughput of the drives meaning the burst rate of the drive is no faster than the already castrated sustained transfer performance.

ok thanks for the help... i should have simply stated that i also would like to add in a bigger drive later on as well. lol 😀

Heh, now as I was reading it when I was just adding to the OP, I could see how you misread it. I probably would have misunderstood it too. That was probably one of the reasons I had put the link up for the model so everyone would know what I was referring to... Cheers
