Western digital Caviar Black 500GB, 640Gb? How Many platters?

They both have 2 ..

So the 640gb has much greater data density? 320gb/platter vs 250gb/platter on the 500 drive?

Seems that would have some impact on the data throughput and seek time numbers, but the two drives are spec'd the same on WD's site...?

* Are you going to buy a HD before you replace your PS?
* Are you going to mount your HD vertically or horizontal?

I have never heard one... SHARE!

The 500GB drives should use the same data density as the 640GB, at least in theory. Often the smaller drivers with the same platter count have the extra sectors hidden or disabled. Maybe drive platters are "binned" like GPUs. The lower grade stuff gets rebadged in a cheaper version.

oh right, yes... and they also have a 1x500GB seagate... they look good, if you are willing to trust seagate right now.

Western Digital does have a 500MB/platter drive, but I believe only the newest 1.5TB and 2TB drives utilize them.
