Have used WD black for years in my desktop computer. Great hd, great customer support; had to RMA one once, no hassle, fast delivery. Do not know about laptops, though I assume the quality is the same.

How much space is needed? An SSD or hybrid drive might be better.

Have had two blacks, both were excellent drives. Noticeably faster than the blue. I am sure it doesn't hold a candle to an SSD, but it is plenty fast on my machine with 8 GB of RAM. Keep in mind it will also depend on what you are coming from. If your laptop has a 5400 RPM drive (most do) you will notice the biggest gain. 7200 RPM, less noticeable, but still present.

The issue is that if the OP actually needs 750GB to 1TB of space, there is no SSD that will do it in a reasonable price.

SSDs are good in the 250GB size to price range right now.
