So heres the deal. 2 months ago I ordered 2 Western Digital 74gb Raptors from Monarch Computers. They sent me one for an apple oem, and one from 2004 with an outdated firmware that theyre not even supposed to be selling. I ordered 1 from newegg and sold the apple one. I thought the other one was ok until some forum members told me that the firmware version was not supposed to be sold anymore. I confirmed this with werstern digital. So I contact monarch computers and ask them for an exchange because its a product theyre not even supposed to be selling me in the first place! But its after 15 days so they cant do anything? BS. Then they lie to me and say that drives are ordered from western digital as orders are placed, which is total bullsht. So I contact western digital and they say they can send me a refurbished drive as a replacement. I argue with them because its not my fault I got an outdated drive thats not even supposed to be sold anymore. I payed for a brand new one. So my only option is to take the refurbished one and sell it, then buy a new one from newegg. I will never be doing business with monarch computers again. Western digital says "Its not in their power", right, they make the fricking drives, of course its in their power.

Cliffs:
1. I order 2 WD740's
2. I receive an outdated one and an apple one
3. They cant exchange it because its after 15 days
4. Western digital refuses to give me a new one even though thats what I payed for
5. I payed for a new drive, but am forced to take a refurbished one.

What's wrong with an Apple one?
Is it possible to upgrade firmware on a hard drive?

You bought the drive through Monarch, you deal with them if they sent you the "wrong" thing. If you went over your 15 days, you are screwed. Does the drive with the old firmware not work correctly? Why should Western Digital send you a new drive? You are not entitled to a new drive just because you are not happy with a certain firmware revision. You are lucky they offered to send you a refurb drive. Your own fault for not picking up on the firmware soon, if it was so important to you, you should have caught it sooner.

Mistake 1. Ordering a WD hard drive.
Mistake 2. Waiting more than 15 days to complain about it to Monarch.
Mistake 3. You are whining on Anantech about it.

I don't see why either are at fault really. Who cares what the firmware on the drive is? Does it not work?

And just because WD doesn't sell them with that firmware anymore doesn't mean that those drives aren't still at retailers waiting to be sold.
