i've rma'd 6 of these New Thinner JB/SE models in 4 months so also figure in the return shipping to Western digital RMA

I've got the Address memorized now.

I assume it is the model WD800JBRTL

The website says that you can get it at the store. Guess it is sold out on the site. It would have been $60 too.

am i missing something.... is this a deal? i dont mean to thread crap but wouldnt this only be a deal if there wasnt a rebate. and yeah... western digitals suck... had two fail on me last month.

When did WD get a bad rep? I don't remember that. Anyway, I just bought a serial WD 80GB a few weeks ago and I have a 36GB Raptor (have had it a year). Hope neither breaks.

My WD 600AB drive just failed on me like a month ago, taking 2 years of my life with it... At least it's got a 3 year warranty... And for those of you that's gonna flame me, yes I did have a backup, but it's not a complete one (like 6 months old) Oh well, Seagate it is from now on...

Hmm....I remember WD selling crap a few years back, then suddenly (like Gateway) making a massive comeback. Guess like Gateway they let their quality go...

I don't know about that. 4 out of my 5 WD drives that I bought 2 years ago just died recently. And of course they're out of warranty by now.

The drop to one year warranties tells me that they are not built to last 3 years. I remember the IBM sucks thread, now the WD sucks thread. All drives have bad batches that get into the field. All I know is that I RMA'd more Maxtor's, per capita, than IBM and Western Digital.

You should just get the refurbished 80JBs from New Egg for $60.00 without the rebate and already RMA'd. HA!!

"Thinner"? Hmm. I'l have to take a look at these newer drives.

I currently an running both an 80GB and a 160GB WD SE/8MB cache ATA-100 IDE HD, both purchased just before they stopped doing the 3-year warrantee thing. The 80GB is a single-platter model, with very high STR (~58MB/s at start of disk). The 160GB is a slightly older model, possibly 3-platter, it only gets about 49MB/s at start. Then again, my Via KT400 chipset has poor PCI/IDE performance, so that might be holding me back as well.

I've had no problems, and in fact, the 80GB WD was purchased to replace a 60GB Maxtor FDB DM9+ drive that failed catastrophically in less than 6 months. (Thankfully, I was able to save 99.99% of my files using Ghost a week before it completely went on me.) The Maxtor apparently had head damage ever since I first owned it, although I didn't know it then. It slowed down occasionally, for no good reason, and eventually just went. It could have been damaged by the store, it was purchased in a retail-box kit.

Edit: That all being said, the price of WD 80GB JB drives really hasn't come down at all. I paid ~$50 AR for mine, and it was purchased in roughly July of 2003.

interesting... got the 120GB last week for the family comp. my 80/120 are runnin good *knocks on wood*....

also opted fo rthe 3yr extended warranty since i'm paranoid about drives failing.
