On back order, wonder how long a wait?

You are right. It does say Back order.

However, When I checked store availability for pick-up, it did list all stores having the item except two of them.

You can get a 7200rpm 3TB rebadged Hitachi (Toshiba) from TigerDirect for $89.99.
Picked up a bunch at the Galleria store yesterday.

Is that $89.99 a special in store deal only?

(I can't find a link to $89.99 on the Tiger Direct Website.)

Thanks. I really don't understand the WD philosophy on this. Most customers just want the thing to work. They don't know and don't care that it's saving them a few pennies a day on electricity. They know right away if it has a shorter life and huge latency because of all the head parking.

WD gets to say they're "Green!" and make people feel good about saving the earth and what not. "It adds up!" Nevermind you might have more drives dying earlier. Of course, that means people spend more money on new drives if out of warranty.

I would say halfway there. Don't rely on me for this, you should do your own research if you buy the drive. The following is just my personal experience with greens.

Most of the intellipower drives will park their heads after 5 minutes of idle. This could be to your advantage depending on appliance but for most people who don't want the head parking to shorten the drive life, there is a tool made by WD called wdidle3. This will actually modify a setting within the nvram of the drive so that it is permanent. You can set a much longer idle timer or even turn off head parking.

I have a 1.5TB version of the green drive that I modified with the tool. You can verify if it worked by checking LLC with a SMART tool. No complaints from me. The greens are dead silent which is one reason I bought it to begin with.
