anyone used data recovery services? how much does it cost and any reccomendations

The cost will depend on exactly what's wrong. It sounds like you have a hardware failure, which requires hands-on repair. Likely cost for a professional data recovery is $400 to $1000. http://ontrack.com is a well-known company that specializes in this stuff. They probably aren't the cheapest .

The last time I performed data recovery, I just installed another Hard Drive as a Master, with the dead Drive as slave. Copied and pasted files.
Ended up saving all the critical files, and over 90% of the personal stuff for the lady.

Try Ontrack or Seagate if you must have the data. PM U the other info as well. If your data is 50/50 important, you can try DriveSavers, DiskDoctor, and the others. This is a physical recovery so I would not recommend the freezer trick or any software attempt. Any further wrong doing your case will cause the the price tag to go higher due to more damages that may be introduced.
