I would love five minutes alone with Mr. Phelps, a cigarette lighter, and a coat hanger.

How can they possibly make that claim about the AMISH?

As has been stated please don't relate these idiots to most Christians.

Thats just as bad as relating the actions of terrorists to all Muslims

That being said I find it quite sad that these idiots have nothing better to do than to go around protesting at funerals that have nothing to do with their cause. So are they saying that this psychopath was in someway doing God's work??

It's pretty easy when you have little to no grip on reality and a distorted view of the Bible.

Westboro Baptist? As in the Baptist we see all over the country? I know my Methodist church has a heirarchy of comittees that at least reviews the churches, making sure the message that they have is on some sort of a target. Did these guys fall completely off the straight path and there are no Baptist organizers that have stepped in to revoke the Baptist name or done something similar?

I think mainstream Baptists don't consider them Baptists at all.

Kind of like LDS doesn't consider RLDS Mormon.

I hate those people at that church. They need to just STFU and mind their own buisness. Or someone just needs to take the time to off them. I doubt a jury would want to convict them...

I've met more types of christians that act just like this as opposed to those who don't. They focus on themselves and their personal beliefs instead of on what the bible actually urges them to say and live like. I was raised protestant christian, church at least 3 times a week + christian school...I'll make the generalization based on my personal experience. And I'm not disagreeing with your last statements.

You know, since school shootings and other random violence is going to continue anyway it would be great if we could somehow get the message out to the instigators that they should choose people like Westboro for their wrath, and not school kids. I mean, if you're going to kill a bunch of people anyway why not go out trying to make the world a better place? I, for one, would be happy to name you martyr and thank you instead of remembering you as a terrible monster. I know that may sound horrible but seriously, this stuff IS GOING to keep happening, why not try and change the targets until we can fix the underlying issues?

Let's see what kind of list I can think of to help them choose their targets:

1. Westboro Baptist Church
2. KKK
3. White supremecists/Neo-Nazis
4. PNAC (sorry, couldn't resist)
5. Repeat violent offender prisons (not drug dealers, I mean the worst of the worst)
6. ...?

You know...I'm not necessarily a violent man but somebody really needs to burn this church to the ground with all of them inside :|
These wingnuts are no different then the terrorists in the middle east.

while i believe strongly in Freedom of speech. this really pisses me off. I agree with Citrix that if i was the father (hell even a family friend) i would be upset enough to hurt them. while i thought it was disgusting to do this at a Soldiers funeral to do this to a young child is a whole different situation.

the Hell's Angels has been running interference on them. Hopefully they do on this one.

Good.

I think the best thing the local churches around the area can do is hold a vigil on the outside of the funeral and allow the Amish to mourn in peace.

Aint freedom of speech great.
too often freedom of speech is also freedom to be a total asshole.

Indeed. Especially when not combined with some level of responsibility.
exfreakinzactly.

You are held responsible for what you say in a sense, in that public opinion of you will be pretty negative if you say things that are unpopular. The problem is, these people WANT people to hate them. Blessed are the persecuted and all that. The best thing we can do is not give them the attention they desire - don't put them on the news and let them spread their message! But you can't really ask the media not to cover it, because it IS news.

Maybe we could let some of our prisoners down at Gitmo stage a counter-protest. Have ourselves a mini-crusade.

Fvcking hatemongers deserve no better.

Actually, they do deserve to have people show up to the funerals. But only if those people are going to dance and piss on their graves.

Advocating violence to combat idots in this situation is not acceptable, even in jest.

Anandtech Moderator

What? Are you kidding? These guys publically insult the deaths of innocent people, and advocating violence is NOT ACCEPTABLE? I'd say it's 100 percent acceptable!

How is this ANY DIFFERENT than the KKK, or White Supremacists...they're taking on YOUR ENTIRE NATION!

While I understand the genesis of your emotions, and while I think the Westy Fundies are so fecking out there, you couldn't even parody them if you tried, I would like to remind YOU, ME, and everyone else in this thread that the Amish have a LOT to teach us all about TRUE Christian forgiveness.

<sarcasm> YEAH, and I recently met a somewhat rude guy from Singapore. Goddamn Asians! <sarcasm>

As a "recovering Catholic" and a dogma despiser, I am no booster of many mainline Christian persuasions, let alone the wacko, hate and fear filled fundies; but, you, sir, have wandered into the bleak Walmart parking lot of blatant over-generalization.
