While I would agree that the procedure is not particularly nice (having seen diagrams of a cat's toe structure, my fingers hurt just THINKING about it), banning it seems a little ridiculous.

Or spay or neuter their pets.

It would not be the first groundbreaking stance taken by West Hollywood.

The city of just one square mile (2.6 square kilometers) and 3,500 residents was the first in the country to enact a program for domestic partners that, among other things, extended health insurance coverage to gay and lesbian partners of city employees. Officials say it was also the first to declare itself "pro-choice" on abortion.

So, its ok to suck the brains out of a live human being while they are in the womb, but it is not ok to declaw your cat. mmmkay.

If your fingers hurt jsut thinking about it, what's the problem w/ banning it?

And I'd bet that not many people who aren't Jewish in West Hollywood circumcise thier kids.

Actually, come to think of it, I'd support both a ban on infant circumcision and cat declawing.

I'm positive that it doesn't feel the greatest, but if given the choice between euthenizing a cat with a scratching problem and having them declawed, I find declawing a little more humanitarian of a choice.

Because it beats the alternative with a cat that refuses to:

1) Respect authority (ie it's not OK to rip me a new asshole when I try to feed you)
2) Not destroy the home
3) Not abuse other pets

I suppose it's a necessary evil.

I find that declawing, while probably hurts the cat a little bit, is good. If only you people could see my arms before we got the cat declawed... it looked like i was being tortured by Freddy Krueger.

Not to mention that cat scratches are infamous for some positively wicked infections.

In spite of their size, they can pose a serious health risk if they don't know how to play nice.

Quite often, when a cat is declawed, it just starts biting instead of scratching.

I would give them the chance, but if they still didn't learn then I would have it put down.

Don't get me wrong, I love cats & would hate to do it.

But I will not keep an animal that is a danger to me or my family, nor will I put some other unsuspecting family in danger.

My cat bites a little bit but that doesnt hurt as much as the scratching that occurred... His bites are nothing compared to the blood-loss that occurred with the scratches :)

That may be true, but I have to see a cat hang from someones arm or chest by their teeth. I've know some little hellion cats that would literally bury their claws into your chest to the point where they could hang buy them. That's how one of the cats got the name Velcro.

I hated that little ball of fur. IF I was to have a cat(though it would never happen), I'd have the front paws declawed only. I'd have the back left in. The fronts are much more viscous.

while my earlier post was ment to be funny, I don't see how anyone would tolerate any pet that would bite scratch or destroy anything. If a dog did that stuff most likely it would be put to sleep or given away. It just doesn't seem right to care for an animal that attacks or mistreats it's owner.

Some animals are not suited to being pets. They should either escape into the woods, or be put down.

It's between the cat and it's owner;)

I mean common what's next? Ban clipping Dobis ears and tails? Ban marking your livestock with a brand or ear tag?

Will you be grandfathered in if you take the cat the Orange and have him declawed?

I had this same issue: a problem cat that tore up the house and scratched people. Although a good cat otherwise, nothing would change him from his scratching ways. Finally, we had the choice of declawing the front paws or putting him under. Edit: at the Vet's advice and as a last resort, we had him declawed, and he's been a (relatively) good cat ever since. I didn't want to do it, and I felt quite bad about having to do it, but I felt it was a much better thing to do that to have it killed, and I stick by that decision.

There are ways to curb clawing abuses without declawing the cat.

Clipping and claw caps are but two ways to minimize damage from cat scratching. But, of course, these options require constant monthly or weekly maintenance.

Depends on what age you get the cat declawed at. If it's matured, it won't even know the difference. If it is young, it may start biting.

<--- mucho personal experience with this.

I think that's a good thing. Declawing can be a cruel and painful process, and it can result in behavioral problems.

west hollywood, or WEHO, as they call it, is one of the worst run cities in the US, this idea comes from having nothing else to do than, declaw cats, while other "actual" cities have more pressing issues.

nothing happens in west hollywood, so this is an improvement

Stupid people are at it again. No wonder they call it the "land of fruit and nuts" ;)

[rant]Anyway, I can't stand cats that bite or scratch (that means most of them). My dog is friendly, and she does not bite or scratch. She's also in an obedience club, and we enjoy working on agility courses and stuff like that. Now show me a cat that can do those things. :) [/rant]
