In the 14th century, an upsurge in demand for textiles in Europe caused loom owners to look for ways of increasing productivity. What came to be was the creation of the mechanical clock. Workers resisted the regimentation of their lives. They enjoyed working a schedule regulated only by the seasons and the rising and setting of the sun. The workers staged uprisings against the clock - but to no avail. The government sided with employers and imposed fines for ignoring the "Werkglocken". Harsher peanalties, including death, were imposed on anyone trying to use the clocks bells to signal a revolt.
700 years later....many people are, in effect, slaves of the Werkglock.
Can you imagine life without a clock?
