For some reason i cant remember the last time i actually burst out laughing when watching an episode of the simpsons, i think ralph said it best "its funny but not ha-ha funny".
Compared to southpark or family guy i think the simpsons are pretty tame.

Yes, rent some of the DVDs, especially seasons 3-4. "Marge vs. the Monorail" is one of my all-time favorite TV episodes.

One of the recent reruns i remember being especially funny was the episode that lisa becomes a vegetarian. That had a ton of great moments.

The Simpsons make a tired subtle mockery of everything. It wasn't always tired.

The Simpsons have never been funny in my opinion. At times it was watchable but nothing special. I have never understood the attraction.

The first several years were brilliant satire. Brilliant, well written scripts.

Now, the writing is of a very poor standard. The show is not amusing. But people keep watching! It's a cash cow for Fox and producers, I guess. It could be improved, if the producers were willing to pay for talented writers, but that costs money.

It was amazing back when conan was a writer. Family guy has become what the simpsons once were. Once this simpsons got so huge, fox started trying to make it a "safer" show to protect their cash cow and appeal to a broader audience.

IMO the Simpsons is the most literate satire ever broadcast, and Family Guy and South Park are juvenile stupidity compared to the best Simpsons seasons (which I would define as season 3 through maybe 10). I think the new Simpsons are still generally worlds better than SP.
