(CNN) -- Health officials said Wednesday that they've sent warnings to Yosemite National Park visitors from 39 other countries about a potentially deadly hantavirus uncovered at some of the park's cabins this summer.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said up to 10,000 people were at risk, after estimating the number of friends and family members of those who stayed with visitors who booked reservations at the cabins.

The syndrome is a rare lung disease that kills about a third of those infected. Symptoms can include fever, chills, cough, headaches, gastrointestinal problems, muscle aches and fatigue, though it is not communicable from person to person.
The incubation period is typically two to four weeks after exposure, with a range of a few days up to six weeks.
In the United States, the carriers of hantavirus are deer mice, cotton rats, rice rats and white-footed mice.
The virus can be present in the rodents' urine, droppings and saliva, and it is spread to people when they breathe in air contaminated with the virus, the CDC says.

DENVER – The parents of 7-year-old Sierra Jane Downing thought she had the flu when she felt sick days after camping in southwest Colorado.

Sierra Jane Downing smiles during Wednesday's news conference in Denver about her recovery from bubonic plague.
When she had a seizure, her father rushed her to the local hospital in Pagosa Springs. An emergency room doctor who saw Sierra Jane for the seizure and a 107-degree fever late Aug. 24 wasn't sure what was wrong either, and called other hospitals before the girl was flown to Denver.
There, a pediatric doctor at Rocky Mountain Hospital for Children racing to save Sierra Jane's life got the first inkling that she had bubonic plague. Dr. Jennifer Snow first suspected the rare disease using the girl's symptoms, a history of where she'd been and an online journal's article on a teen with similar symptoms.
"If she had stayed home, she could've easily died within 24 to 48 hours from the shock of infection," Snow said.
It was the first bubonic plague case Snow and her colleagues had seen.
The bubonic plague hasn't been confirmed in a human in Colorado since 2006, when four cases were reported, according to state health officials. Federal health officials say that on average, seven cases are reported in the U.S. each year.

Hantavirus is particularly interesting. The virus is prevalent in the rodent population west of the Mississippi, stretching from New Mexico/Arizona to just south of The Wall. There have been cases in NY and along the east coast of the country as well. These species of rodents aren't city-dwellers, so thankfully cases of Hanta are pretty rare although the rodents themselves are not. The disease is contracted via aerosolization of rat droppings and inhalation of the particles. Some strains of Hanta are deadlier than Ebola virus and currently there is no cure for Hanta. Patients who contract the virus are given palliative care and a pat on the back.

Run for your lives!!~!!

I'm a little surprised there aren't more cases of plague. I see prairie dogs fucking everywhere. Even if direct contact is rare, fleas can jump hosts and people become infected by their pets. I guess plague actually kills colonies pretty quickly though, limiting the opportunity for transmission.

Beats getting Hannah virus which turns the victim ghostly white and adds inexplicable nude scenes to otherwise G rated movies.
