WEP problem with wireless router

I posted this in tech support, but didn't get a response so I'm hoping it gets read here:

I have a Siemens Speedstream wireless router, and a Dell Truemobile wireless card (rebranded Orinoco card I believe) in my laptop. The problem is, when WEP is turned off, everything works fine. I can browse my network, get on the internet, etc... However, when I turn either 64 or 128 bit WEP on, Windows asks for the network key, and when I input it it connects and reports that it has an excellent connection to the network, but nothing works. I can't browse my network, nor get on the internet. Windows seems to think the connection is fine, but I can't get anything to work. If I shut WEP back off in the router settings, everything works fine again.

Any suggestions? Is something wrong with my router setup? Or Windows setup?

Thanks

Hate to ask, but are you sure it's the exact same key in both the router and your laptop? And did you enter the key into Windows (I'm assuming you're using XP) wireless config utility, or the wireless card's utility? I've found Windows wireless config utility to be sort of a hassle, so I set mine up by not allowing Windows to control my wireless settings and using the util that came with my wireless card

Yeah, the key is the same. I am using Windows wireless config thing, as the Dell Truemobile utility only monitors the connection, but works in conjunction with the Windows config in order to have everything setup properly.

Like I said, when I put the key in, it actually connects back to the network, I just can't do anything on it.

I had a similar problem with my linksys. I could browse the local network with wep enabled but couldnt surf the internet. I solved it by using 64bit wep instead of 128bit. Less secure but at least its working. I just turned on mac filtering to add a little more security.

I've tried both 64bit and 128bit WEP, and neither work. If I have WEP enabled, I can't even get back into the router setup (even though WinXP on my laptop says it has connected back to my wireless network).

I have it setup so only my laptop can connect, so I'm not THAT worried about security, but it would be nice to have some kind of WEP security as well.

It took me a while to get my router with WEP working (SMC 7004VWBR). When I enabled WEP on the router and tried entering the keys in the wireless card properties, I entered the phrase that I used to generate a 128-bit key. I couldn't get on so I disabled it and tried again. Found out that I had to enter the entire key that was generated from the phrase.

I think I had to uncheck "let Windows figure out the key" or something like that and manually enter the key into the wireless card properties. Hopefully I can post again with the steps once I get home. 🙂

From a dos prompt run ipconfig /all Verify that the correct values come up. It may not be forwarding correct dhcp info. Try setting the ip and gateway and dns server info manually.
