WEP or VPN running over unWEPped WLAN - which is more secure?

Just curious.

In order to prevent 'drive-by's...

Is it more secure to run PPTP VPN to the server (with the wireless network adaptor being the 'external' NIC) or run the Wireless NIC as an 'internal' adaptor on the server with 128-bit WEP?

(Assume the server in question cant run IPSEC)

While "more is (usually) better," remember that every layer of encryption is gonna slow the link down some. If it came down to one or the other, I'd probably go with WEPless VPN. I can't imagine the twerps spending much time trying to break in when there are soooooooooo many other easy target out there.

Since I now have a spare Wireless gateway and computer(s), I'm thinking of setting up a separate wireless system, no WEP, no MAC association, and the only server on the system is loaded with nothing but virus and trojan infected software and files. Let 'em connect, maybe I can smoke their systems (probably not, but hopefully it'll punish some of the wannabe pukes).

my favorite is to configure a redhat 6.2 default machine on an unsecured WLAN link off a cheapy SOHO wlan AP. logging via a hardwired serial cable to another machine and using swatch / WAP txt msging to let me know when someone connects to the machine, then i can watch them ping on the box for a bit, then head outside to see who's sitting in a car with a laptop LCD glowing i like to walk out with a baseball bat to terrif^H^H^H^H^H confuse them

I'm happy knowing there's people like scottmac out there....make sure to disquise some as pr0n videos too.....man, i hate those guys...
