you can still get the old, simple blocks. But I'll say no brick is "proprietary". In fact with all the specialized parts, the shit you can build now is amazing and MUCH broader than what you could 10, 20 even 30 years ago.

We have a whole suitcase full of them at my parents from when I was little. I never made the stuff in the kit it came with but made my own things. cars, spaceships, all kinds of things.

My daughter plays with the big size legos but we have to get her switched over to the small ones.

Man I remember lego and knex, used to always build stuff with those. I think my best accomplishment was a wind powred crane that was like 8 feet tall. I would put the fan in front of it and it would lift up weights. Was kinda fun to make. Gears are awesome to play with.

I also remember building airplanes out of lego and purposely making them crash by dropping them mid air to the cement floor. I used to make all the seats inside with people in them lol. Surprised I did not grow up to be a terrorist.

Remember making the space ships, and if a part broke off, you would land and then have the little guys make repairs
